South Carolina Politics

Polls are closed in South Carolina, where former Gov. Mark Sanford faces Elizabeth Colbert Busch in a special election for an open U.S. House seat.

Sanford, a Republican, left office in disgrace after admitting to having an extramarital affair while he was governor. Democrat Colbert Busch is a businesswoman and political newcomer and sister of Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report." Sanford spent Election Day making 10 campaign stops after making 15 appearances on Monday. Colbert Busch made calls to voters from a campaign phone bank.

Sanford was favored to win the race until reports emerged that his ex-wife had filed trespassing charges against him after he visited her home while she was not present. National Republicans withdrew their support for his campaign while national Democrats poured about $1 million into Colbert Busch's campaign. Ref. CNN
