Constellation Mythology

I love looking up at the stars and pointing out the constellations. Even though the myths behind them are obviously not real, it's still fun to recount the myths that follow each constellation.

Orion: There are two stories that surround the constellation of Orion. One story notes Neptune as his father, and the Queen of the Amazons his mother. He supposedly because the best hunter in the world, and claimed that he could hunt and kill any animal on Earth. A tiny scorpion stung him and he died.

The other story gives Orion no mother, and was a gift to a peasant from Mercury, Jupiter, and Neptune. His sister Diane was responsible for his death by shooting with an arrow, and out of grief she placed him among the stars.

This website has the major constellations and the stories that revolve around them:

Mythology Constellation

I love to read mythology and this is what I found about Orion.

"Orion, a giant and a great hunter, there are several legends which tell of his death, one involving Artemis. It is said that he tried to rape the virgin goddess, so killed him with her bow and arrows. Another says she conjured up a scorpion which killed Orion and his dog. Orion became a constellation in the night sky, and his dog became Sirius, the dog star. Yet another version says it was the scorpion which stung him and was transformed into the constellation with Orion, the later being Scorpio. Artemis was enraged when one of her nymphs, Callisto, allowed Zeus to seduce her, but the great god approached her in one of his guises; he came in the form of Artemis. The young nymph was unwittingly tricked, and she gave birth to Arcas, the ancestor of the Arcadians, but Artemis showed no mercy and changed her into a bear. She then shot and killed her. As Orion, she was sent up to the heavens, and became the constellation of the Great Bear (which is also known as the Plough). "

As you said there are many stories about Orion. I think it's fascinating the stories that were created to explain the stars. If you're interested in mythology go to this here site for some great information.

Constellation Mythology Paranormal & Mystics Dreams Studies

There is no one story to any one constellation. There are many stories to each constellation, some linking them to each other. There many different versions to all the constellation each from a different area in the world. My favorites are from greece and the norsemen. In truth there is no real story to each star because stars live and die like people do, per say,and only have so long to live. It is reluctant that our own star still burns the same and I'm sure some of the stars still burn the same as well, but in time all of these legendary "lives" will dissipate.
