You Are Special

This is a children's book written by Max Lucado with a wonderful message. It's written with a deep Christian meaning, but is written a semi-secular way. Which means when I'm teaching in a public school, I can read it.

The story is centered around Punchinello who is a Wimmick. The Wimmicks are little wooden people that resemble puppets. The Wimmicks run around all day either giving people grey dots are stars; grey dots being negative and stars being positive. Punchinelle is always getting grey dots, and is feeling really depressed about it. He meets another Wimmick who doesn't have any grey dots or stars because they won't stick on her. She tells him to go see Eli, who is there maker.

After talking with Eli, he learns a valuable lesson about how Eli made him exactly how he wanted him, and so he's perfect how he is. It's a story about not living up to other people's expectations and stereotypes, but being satisfied with who we are. The Christian meaning behind it is that God created us and we are His, and He made us how He wanted us.

I read this almost every week this past summer to my girls, and all ages absolutely loved it. Even though it's aimed at children, I think it's a great reminder to adults as well.

I love this book! I don't have the patience for most novels, so children's books are almost my favorite genre. This one would be great to give to any family with small children, because it teaches the importance of prayer in the process of repentance and gaining self-esteem. The lesson is taught in a nice way, and the pictures tell the story more beautifully than the text.

Oh, me too!! We love Max Lucado books. You Are Special is on video, too, so we have that and the book. The other books that we have by him are: Because I Love You, Just In Case You Ever Wonder, The Crippled Lamb, and Tell Me the Secrets.

Because I love you is a story between a man and a boy, which represents God and us. It's a "tale of enduring truth, a story of unconditional love." The boy does not obey the man and we see trouble come to the boy. Then he calls on Eli to help him. It takes time, but Eli comes through.

Just in Case You Ever Wonder is, "...everything you'd like to say to your children about how much you love them and most of all how special they are to God. ...(the book) wraps your children in its warm message of love, comfort, and protection."

The crippled Lamb..."Joshua, the black and white spotted lamb, longed to be like the other lambs. He wondered why he had to limp along with a crippled leg, instead of running and playing in the meadow. Because Joshua the lamb was different, he often felt left out. Yet God had a very special plan for his life, as He does for all who feel alone. Joshua not only witnessed the greatest event in history, he was able to give the newborn King (Jesus) the one thing He needed most." ( I particularly like this book for my special needs son)

Tell me the secrets is a compilation of stories that are uplifting and helpful.

I wanted to put these on the 'Best Book Ever' thread, but I didn't think I could put children's books on there. It is so wonderful to meet other Max Lucado fans.
