Will Full Time Missionaries Be Pulled From The U.s

Our ward mission leader said Elder Ballard spoke recently at a mission conference and said the day will shortly come when all full time missionaries from the U.S. will be called to foreign countries. Each ward and or branch in the U.S. will be responsible for their own missionary labors. I already see this happening. Just a couple of years ago, we had a pair of missionaries assigned to each ward in our area. Later, they reduced it to 2 missionaries per building which covered 3 wards. Today, we have 2 missionaries who cover our entire Stake and part of another.

Any more, our missionary focus is not on finding people for the missionaries to teach, but more in fellowshipping our neighbors and doing the work ourselves. I can see the church pulling missionaries completely from our area. It makes sense. We have enough members here to do the work. Why assign full time missionaries to come and do our job? Especially when so much of the world is in need of the Gospel where we have little or no organization.

Has anyone heard this? It will be interesting to see what happens.

I hope this is not true. We, as members, will never do the job as well as full time missionaries. We don't carry the same mantle as they. They have been set apart specifically for this calling. They can devote full time to it. How many members are going to spend time tracting for example. Although tracting isn't very efficient/effective, it does work.

Ward missionaries are also set apart specifically for this calling. Maybe in the future, everyone will be set apart as a missionary in the same way almost everyone is a home or visiting teacher today. I don't think you need full time missionaries in areas where the church is strong. We are all under obligation to share the Gospel with non members. Lets send full time missionaries to countries where the church needs them.

Well, I am a ward missionary, and there is no way I can do the same job a full time missionary can. In fact, I am not set aside in the same manner. They are set aside to dedicate their lives to this calling. I was not. I believe missionaries are still needed in this country as well. So, I hope they don't pull them all from the US.

There may be areas of the country that are less fruitful than others, but not all. Maybe we pull them from areas that aren't willing to listen to and/or accept the Gospel. In fact, for that matter, Germany has very little conversion success and has had very little success for decades. Perhaps we should pull them from there because they are wasting their time.

I trust the Brethren will make the right decision because they will do it prayerfully. I haven't heard they plan to pull them out of the US and I doubt it's true. I think it is more likely a rumor. If they were going to do this, they would probably phase them out, yet missionaries are called to missions in the States even now.
