One of my favorite series. Gods last message actually comforted me, . This is one of few book series I have actually been able to get my wife to read, heavily recommended to introduce reading for fun to people who have never done such.
One of my favourites also. Am a big fan of Doctor Who, and knowing this, my dad got me into Hitchikers. Could someone send me my towel? I left it on Ursa Minor, and I feel cold on the arctic moon of Traal. I'd rather not freeze to death here, and the colder it gets the more likely it is the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast will enter here, and I'd rather not be able to see by the time it gets here. Anyway, I have found the Hitchikers Guide to be useful in telling me which books to read, how the existence of God has been unproven, but that the man that did so got himself killed on a Zebra crossing, but I have found no reason to doubt the usefulness of a towel. Anyway, the novel was a great success, but not everyone knows that it was originally a radio show, then it was a tv series, based on a radio show, then Douglas Adams, who wrote all of the stuff, wrote into a book. The titles of the books are all taken from the text. Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the first book in the series, is named after the book. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe is when the crew goes for a bite to eat, and watch the universe blow up while they're at it. Life, the Universe and Everything, was the question asked of the intelligent supercomputer Deep Thought, before it came up with the answer of 42. So Long and Thanks for all the Fish is the last message given by the dolphins to humanity before they left Earth for good.
It is later found out that Deep Thought built a second computer, named the Earth, to work out what the question was to the answer 42, and this computer was called The Earth. The Earth was run by hyper-intelligent mice for many millennia, until the planet was destroyed by Vogon Destructor Fleet, and the Answer was lost forever. By a staggering coincidence, that very morning, and earthling called Arthur Dent had had his house demolished to make way for a bypass. He was rescued from Earth at the last minute by his friend from another world Ford Prefect. They escape onto one of the ships, get flushed out into space, and rescued by another ship before they suffocate to death. This all sounds very silly, but is, in fact, so well written by Adams, that it seems like a coherent piece, although written as comedy.
Arthur finds out that the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is an electronic book with the words: Don't Panic, written in large, friendly letters on the cover, and that this book contains all information about the known universe. When he looks up the Earth entry, he found that it only had a single word on it: Harmless. Ford Prefect, his alien friend who thought cars were the dominant life-form on the planet, managed to extend the entry to 'Mostly Harmless', which is the name of the fifth book.
Adams tackles several interesting issues in hilarious fashion. With the introduction of the Babel Fish, essentially a small fish that, if you stick one in your ear, translates anything you hear or say. Adams uses this to make a joke about religion, one of the most funny jokes in the series, so I won't spoil it, but this is just one example of how Adams uses humour and clever language to tell his story.

Douglas Adams, may he rest in peace, wrote a wonderful series with the Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy. The characters are really a little unusual and very entertaining. The books are fairly quick reads. They make me actually laugh reading them quite a bit. I just love the dry British sense of humor. The entire series is well worth reading. If you enjoy British humor in general these are a must read. In the event you don't I would still try them out. They might change your mind.
This is actually a book series I have had at least so9me interest in, hearing and seeing it reference often online but never having a chance to read the book series.
Any recommendations others might offer involving the series, something that might encourage me to take the step need to start reading?
