Thompson M1928A1 Gun Review History & Civil Business Politics

Well, its one of the more famous submachine guns ever made, and was heavily used by soldiers, law enforcement, and the mafia of the prohibition era.

Its also one of the more effective SMGs made, benefiting both from a high volume of fire and decent accuracy at short to medium range.

In combat, it was mostly used as a point defense weapon against Guerilla ambushes.

Yes, everything Daishain said and few more things. Having bee in Army Special Forces I had the privilege of working with an incredible assortment of weapons. This is because we had to be proficient on a lot of weapons because you never knew where yuo'd go and what weapons they were using and as trainers we'd be expected to know. This was one of those weapons. What a great gun. It had a horrible tendency to pull up on you hard that you had to compensate for, but for close in defense, room cleaning, and urban environments it was awesome.

Now, the original question is, for what was this made? This is not a hunting weapon. This weapon was made for one purpose, to kill people. And the heavy .45 caliber bullet it fired made this excellent for its primary purpose. It was originally developed to clear tranches in WW I. They envisioned people getting in the trenches and people being able to produce a large volume of fire in weapon that was fairly small and easy to use in the confined space that trenches afforded. The other weapon we had, the Browning Automatic Rifle, was a great weapon in its own right, possibly the best weapon of its kind at the time, but it was large and cumbersome for use in the trenches.

In the streets of Chicago and during WW 2 is where it came into its own. In Chicago it provided gangsters and law enforcement with near military firepower… it just didn't have the range of most military weapons. In WW 2 it was provided to officers, tank crews, MPs, SF type units, and other organizations. Officers got it because they weren't expected to lead from the front. Their job was to maneuver their units. Tank crews because it provided them with firepower if they need to dismount for some reason. MPs for obvious reasons. SF units got it because their combat was often close in.

All in all, this is a great weapon that performed its primary function all too well.
