Jim Jones - Jonestown

Jim Jones, leader of a large cult following that started in the 50's, takes his followers on a ride that ends in the 70's with a mass suicide.

Early on it looked like the group had good intentions, but later, you can see the focus on death and secrecy. I have always heard of it as referred to as brainwashing of the followers. I can blame him for his own suicide, but without a gun to anyones head, well over 400 follow. Brainwashing takes the responsibility for the action away from the followers. Do you believe that they are to blame for their demise or is it just Jim Jones's fault?

Just a thought,

Vincenzo

Not having much time to research I am going off of memory... as far as I know there were some that did not want to participate and they were forced to at gun point. I think one or two did escape? All in all it looked like most willingly did as Jones asked because they thought they were going to get some 'greater blessing' I guess. Similar to this are islamic terrorist groups and the historic last stand of the Jews in Massada who use suicide as a means to somehow elevate spirituality.

Yes, three or more escaped. One of the teachers I worked with in the Industry was a very good friend with the young woman who escaped from the plane and hid while the Legislator was being killed. She hid motionless for hours, maybe even a day, for she told me she studied a blade of grass and tried to become one with it.

She was wisked out of the country and needed a place to hide as our government felt she was still being followed and would be killed for what she knew and saw. She was also to be protected as she would be a wittness in the future court case against him.

She was brought to my house where she found clothes, warmth, food, rest, laughter and hid for some days.

Then she was wisked off again to a very remote area in our country and then to another country. I am getting older and can't remember her name. smile.gif usmap.gif https://www.bordeglobal.com/foruminv/index....E=emoticons&s=#

Now that is interesting. Did she share with you any unusual information about Jim Jones or the brain washed followers? What caused her to 'wake-up' and realize that Jim was a fraud - the killing or before that?

I think that a sister of hers had taken her down there for some reason and she didn't want to go. I think in some way she was in contact with the "outside" via the Congressman. I know that she wanted out and went with him to the plane. There is a book about it. It has been many years. I will try to remember more.

Offtopic but,
I had mentored the other Studio Teacher, lived in an area where one would never guess she was in and had the same size clothes she needed as she had nothing. I wasn't afraid at the time. It just seemed to be the right thing to do. My parents in Indiana always has refugees from Cuba, Estonia etc. in the home.

Have Fibromyalgia and haven't slept. Good night!

Perhaps I can find a book a the library to stir the cobwebs.
