Military's Stance On Civil Disobedience

How the military handles civil disobedience

Its not known how the Navy is responding to a sailor who refused to stand for the national anthem. But Rep. Duncan Hunter wants swift action. “If somebody is in the military, and he or she chooses not to salute the flag, it’s grounds for removal." Ref. Source 2x.

I agree you took a oath and swore to defend this nation from all enemies both foreign and domestic and to uphold the constitution and protect its standard against the same. IF you can not stand for our nations anthem or the flag then I say drum the service member out with a dishonorable discharge. We do not need this type in any of our military organizations.

I have to agree. As a citizen, that woman has a right to express her disapproval of the country and its government by such means.

But as a soldier, in uniform and on duty, one is representing and defending this nation. It isn't about one's personal opinions at that point, but rather one's duty.

I don't even understand this. If you don't wish to stand for the National Anthem that is your right as a civilian. Why even join the military if you feel that way? I know many do for the perks such as the GI bill. With those come responsibility as well. She should be dishonorably discharged if she refuses to stand for it. That's disrespectful to her fellow service members, veterans and those that died serving this country.

I absolutely agree that this person should be dishonorably discharged. As citizens we all have certain rights but when we join the military we voluntarily give up some of these rights. This is just a fact and it is written in the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Ah yez the UCMJ and AR 670-1 were the two major books I used in the pusuit of my job. If I saw a service member doing somethinglike this service member did we would have had sserious words and I may have been a catalyst towardthe service member being kicked out of the military witha dishonorable discharge. But that was another time and I am glad I am no longer enforcing military law.

I have to agree with the consensus here, as one who willingly joined the military and taking on all the oaths and responsibilities this entails if a solider is unwilling to stand for the flag and repeat the nation anthem then they should be spoken firmly with. If they still refuse, yes see to it that they are dishonorably discharged.
