Forced Abortion Opponent Reportedly Safe at U.S. Embassy

Forced abortion opponent Chen Guangcheng, a blind attorney, escaped house arrest - where brutal family planning officials had confined him for years after he exposed a massive campaign of forced abortions and sterilizations.

Since the daring rescue that apparently has allowed him to escape to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, news on Chen's status and location have been hard to come by today.

The rescue comes ahead of a visit to China next week by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and the fact that Chen is currently at the Embassy could make the visit more tenuous or it could provide political cover for the United States to provide him asylum or other diplomatic assistance. Obama Refuses to Comment on Protecting Chen Guangcheng

Obama In a press conference today with Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda of Japan in the East Room of the White House, President Barack Obama refused to comment on whether the U.S would offer long-term protection for forced abortion opponent Chen Guangcheng.

"I am aware of the press reports," Obama said without naming the human rights activist directly, "but I"m not going to make a statement on the issue."

Obama claimed that the issue of human rights in China, though he did not mention forced abortions, sterilizations or infanticides specifically, comes up frequently in conversations between American and Chinese leaders. Ref. Source 6

China Threatened to Kill Chen Guangcheng's Wife to Secure Deal

Chen Guangcheng, the Chinese forced abortion opponent, was reportedly pressured to leave the U.S. Embassy and accept the deal the United States struck with China to release Chen from its temporary protection. Now, Chen reportedly wants to leave China with his family, as he is worried about their safety.

As LifeNews reported, Chen has left the U.S. Embassy and headed to a local hospital for medical treatment following his years of house arrest by family planning and Communist Party officials. Late last week, Chen fled his hometown after escaping and supporters drove him to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing after they were unable to keep him safe in homes in the Asian nation's capital. When Chinese authorities attempted to apprehend him, he fled to the U.S. Embassy for protection. Ref. Source 4

Chen Guangcheng Phones Congress During Emergency Hearing

Chen Guangcheng spoke live via telephone today at an emergency Congressional hearing today in the U.S. House about his situation and how he desires to meet with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

At the end of a hearing today, in which several top activists fighting for human rights and freedom for Chen and his supporters pressing the case against forced abortions, Bob Fu, the president of ChinaAid, got Chen on the phone for the members of Congress in attendance to hear.

After the witnesses had all testified, Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) asked if anyone had been in touch with Chen since Wednesday. A short time later, Fu and CECC chairman Chris Smith (R-NJ) telephoned Chen and were able to have him speak directly to the hearing. Ref. Source 6

A possible breakthrough emerged today in the case of Chen Guangcheng, the Chinese activist who made a daring escape from house arrest and took refuge in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing before venturing out amid U.S.-Chinese negotiations over his future.

The Chinese government said Chen could apply to travel to the United States to study -- a development that the United States instantly cited as an encouraging sign of progress in what has been a thorny and controversial impasse.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Chen has been offered a fellowship from an American university "where he can be accompanied by his wife and two children."

"The Chinese government has indicated that it will accept Mr. Chen's applications for appropriate travel documents. The United States government expects that the Chinese government will expeditiously process his applications for these documents, and make accommodations for his current medical condition. The United States government would then give visa requests for him and his immediate family priority attention," she said. "This matter has been handled in the spirit of a cooperative U.S.-China partnership." Ref. CNN

Amnesty International Blasts New Chen Deal, "Ignores His Family"

Amnesty International is condemning a new deal the United States is attempting to arrange with China to allow Chen Guangcheng, the forced abortion opponent, to come to the United States to study as a visiting student.

Victoria Nuland, a U.S. State Department spokeswoman, says China has allowed Chen to submit the application and could travel to the United States with his wife and children.

But the human rights watchdog group says the deal ignores the plight of Chen's extended family, which has already faced persecution in the form of arrests and beatings following Chen's escape from home confinement. AI says the pledge by China that it will allow Chen Guangcheng to go abroad with his family so he can study seems empty as long as the Chinese state keeps the activist's wider family in detention and retaliates against his supporters.
