Is It Doctrine That We Abstain From Pornography?

While I can find instances in the scriptures that could be used to support the view that pornography should not be engaged in by man, is it doctrine using the standards presented as required in this thread: What is official Church doctrine.

Pornography Abstain We Doctrine Is

I am not sure I get this question. It is obvious that pornography is not allowed because Christ himself that to lust after a woman is sin. No vote needed to sustain what the Son says. We merely have to analyze what pornography is and the answer is readily available. Maybe if you can elaborate.

Rather off topic, but...
There are a number of Threads in the Mature section about Porn and related sexuality, but they are not religious based - you may also like to give input there - some of the responses may surprise you.

I agree that Christ saw we should not lust after women in our hearts/minds. But you are necessarily interpreting what Christ said and applying it to an issue from today.

But the question is whether it is doctrine that merely looking at pornography is a sin (you don't have to lust after it, I don't think). Further, what about taking photos for pornography, or helping in the transfer of pornography in the market?

Is it doctrine that those things are sin?

I know that President Hinckley has spoken out against them. I'm just wondering if it's "doctrine" as that thread defines it.

Although, I understand what you are saying the concept behind it does not make sense. It is almost like you are suggesting that there must be a verse of scripture to indicate each 'type' of sin. I disagree that pornography is an issue of today alone. Sex sells, and it has been selling since the beginning of time. Pornography is first about sales and then about what you actually see. Dancing for men, displaying the body of a woman for men as a means of enticement is nothing new.

With regards to your other questions, those are richly Discussed already in other Threads, just search "Nude" and "Porn". As I said before, you will be surprised about the responses. This is the Mature LDS Board, this Topic is a non-issue for me, maybe someone else will continue it?

I don't understand this question either. We have the law of chastity which encompasses this and it is doctrine so why pornography as being something to avoid not be included?

One only has to see what alcohol, drugs and pornography can do do some, very additive. We are warmed and forewarned, for our own good, we can never know if we may be affected on a physical level; we are always affected on a spiritual level. One only has to something, to feel the difference, but I guess if you never had a good relationship with the Spirit, you would not feel it slide away and miss it.

The present advice and words from our Prophet and leaders, are the Word of God, for us Now ! Those with the spirit feel and know that, and can feel the spirit increase and decrease as they do things that are good or not so good as they walk though life.

From my point of view, Commandments and etc are good guidelines and fine, but it is more important to have the Spirit and be one with the Godhead. The Spirit makes someone Christ like, not the Laws alone. Look at the brothers of Nephi, they had the same culture, family inheritances, Laws and Commandant, look how they turned out.

To refine the question a bit. While as a Single Adult, attending a Single Adult Conference decades ago. One of our Speakers, was a California Senator or Assemblyman. He somewhat unwillingly ended up on a subcommittee to review X rated and worse movies, to review the film rating process. He did not like what he had to do, said he asked God to wipe it from his mind, after each movie he had to view and report on. He found he had no remembrance of what he saw, as long as he just did his job.

I guess one needs to question why they want to view pornography. I am aware that in BYU there are pornography books and etc to view, for research, but not sure under what guidelines and rules and why.

With anything in life, does it bring you closer or pull you farther from the Spirit and God.

Pornography = evil.

Pornography = a bent view on sex

Pornography = broken marriages and selfish expectations.

Do we need any other reasons to know that you should abstain even if it weren't doctrinal?

Matthew 5:28 was clearly not talking about pornography as we know it, but about coveting another man's wife. He was saying that contemplating adultery is to commit in your heart. He did not say that it is inappropriate to see a naked woman.

See also Genesis 2:25 which says that Adam and Eve felt no shame in their nakedness.
