The thing is, they don't need to create new laws. There are already laws on the books dealing with this. They (the Senate) just need to put pressure on the Executive branch to enforce the laws.

I think the US Government should tread carefully in dealing with illegal workers. While I agree there must be laws in place to discourage this activity, the sheer size of the illegal workforce means their sudden removal would hurt the economy.
Wasn't it Bush who recently suggested more guestwork places? I think that suggestion has merit. Make the work legal, but don't push the door wide open for mass illegal immigration.

So, now that all the hub-bub is over - what is the result? Same old story right? Remember elections are coming and no one wants to lose the large vote of all the minorities that came through the system illegally and are now residents / citizens - why - because they still have their friends and family to get though the system as well.

I find it strange that people assume Americans don't want to do jobs that Mexican do. I personally would love the job of picking apples, certainly over working at McDonalds. I love being outside, I love nature, and I love hard physical labor. I quess I am an oddity in this way but thats me.
I agree with funbikerchick in that they could be legal citizens. If we are so concerned with having illegals doing our jobs why not just make them legal citizens? They are good enough to do our work but not good enough to be citizens? It is because of the money, pure and simple, thats all it boils down to.
Whether or not they speak English when they become citizens I don't think matters. However I think putting spanish along with english on signs and such sends the message that it is ok for them to not know english.
In the end I think illegal immigrants will be doing low income work for a long time sticker or no sticker. This is probably just some gimmick to make it look like the government cares.

There is a reason that there is unemployment in america. Having all these illegals here is making it harder for americans to find some jobs. I say get rid of the illegals and close the borders. If companies can not hire a illegal worker then maybe they will hire a american worker. Remember illegal immigrants are the cause of over 85% of violent crimes.
It certainly is a gimmick. The reason for it was a growing concern among some Americans that they didn't want illegal immigrants in the US and they didn't want them stealing US Jobs. This was a way to make it easy for the consumer to identify those goods that are promissed to have not been delivered to market by illegal labor. If that really matters to some, then they will pay the additional charge to help re-inforce the laws that make it illegal to use illegal labor. It was a way to deal with a problem without actually dealing with the problem and hoping market forces would adjust the use of illegal labor only if it really meant a lot to the general public. Unfortunately, most are going to buy the cheaper product regardless of who made or picked it (it has already been picked...why let it rot). If all the goods were made without illegal labor, then there would be no price descrepency and we would pay whatever the price ended up to be with domestic labor.
Americans might not want to do the manual labor, but if those jobs were made known by employers...who would really be able to claim unemployment? Welfare/unemployment could push prospective workers in this direction...the pay would have to be more than it is today and conditions would have to improve. So I get it that the average American doesnt want to do this type of work, but if it is that or collecting a government check...the government can make sure that these jobs are filled before cutting the check.
I agree with securing the borders. This is a must on so many different fronts, but we must be able to control our borders for the security of the country.
I don't agree with the idea that if you make it to the US and are illegal then congrats...citizenship is yours. Immigration targets must still be maintained. We need to ensure that the borders eliminate the massive flow of illegal immigration, which is actually about the same or more than legal immigration.
Immigrants that are within the borders currently have an option to stay as long as they pass all citizenship criteria and agree to and understand the oath (done in english) that they would take upon granting of citizenship. However, the borders have to be secured first...announcing a option of relaxed immigration quotas for a year would flood and further bankrupt the federal and state governments with new immigrants.
Once the borders are secured and the illegals become legal and have to file taxes, employers would now be on the hook to report payments to employees (no under the table payments), collect and pay, Fed Tax, State and Local Tax, FICA, SS, etc... From employees into the system. The pay for the jobs would go up...but so would the obligations.
