Do I Need To Pay?

New users somehow feel that they have to pay to use this Community. Why do you think is the reason for that? Is it because instead of posting they immediately try to access Premium and plus features? Is it because they do not read?

I think it is because they try to access features of Premium and Premium plus so they think they have to pay from day one. They obviously do not take the time to read and check around and see all the great features we have for those members who do not pay membership of any kind.

Do I Need To Pay? Feedback & FAQ News Community

I believe the ones who go off into these 'extra' features are not really interested in intellectual discussion, but simply curious. We have loads of Administrators that come on here hoping to get ideas for their own communities. I recently added words letting newbies know that to post and participate in discussion is free. Hopefully that will help.

I think that you should wait and see what the forum is about. Then when you know you want to stay and contribute, then you should pay. You cant get milk unless you pay for the cow.

Pay Need Do

I admit I have gotten frustrated when I have tried to access something quite basic that I didn't realize was only for Premium members, but it hasn't caused me to feel like I have to pay. It makes me wish that I had the money to donate, but I have to worry more about getting my car insurance paid than donating to a site. Yes, there are a lot of features, and I think one thing that may make some of the non-paying members feel a little out is that there is so much emphasis on how much better it is to be a donator. I'm not saying that from my personal opinion because honestly, I don't really care much in that sense. I enjoy posting and expressing my opinion because I am a highly opinionated person, and I don't have to pay to do that.

I don't know. Maybe a suggestion would be for us, as members, to make being a regular member sound just as good as being a premium member, you just don't have a lot of the extra "toys."

What do you consider 'quite basic'?

Can you give an example of how this is emphasized 'so much'?

I am not sure I understand that. You mean members who are not upgraded need to feel that their membership is just as good as an upgraded member?

Let me explain a few things that have been emphasized elsewhere, but probably needs mentioning here in general:

When we first started this community we did not have any kind of donation system, but we also had a lot of server trouble, so we decided to put out some money and make it worthwhile. There are members here who donated a lot of money towards this long before there was even FP or 'features'. We decided that it would be a good idea to have these members receive some kind of elevated status for this and so we started adding features - that is how all of this started, but the foundation (and still is...) of this Community is Intellectually Mature Discussion, thus if someone joins and only post constructively then that is all they need to do and unless they venture into the 'extra' pages will they realize that upgrading is a factor. In fact we have many members on here like that, they come post in the topics that interest them and leave. Emphasis on added features do not bother them because they are not here for that.

Why emphasis on upgrading on 'extra'? The main reason for this is because users sometimes do not understand value, time and money. An example of this: I used to have it where all users could play all the RPGs at the same time for free, but then they started to play in one RPG and skip the other, or the would make us create a character for them and not show up - so RPG status came in to cut this back. Donating members help us to know who is serious and who is not. Who we should listen to and whom we should just take into consideration as far as extra features go.

Now the reason for this thread was to find out why a 'new' member would think they have to pay since in all the registration / guest pages emphasizes that the site is FREE, but as we ascertained before most users head for the 'extra' features first, because they are not really here for intellectual discussion. My personal feeling is that most of these are teens. Save for Smudge and one or two others it is a rare thing to have a young teen become a serious poster here - you can tell by their intro thread (which also has been setup to detect this).

That's not what I meant at all. I understand, and completely agree, that people who donate do deserve extra features since they are contributing in a gigantic way to the sites survival.

What I'm saying is that regular member status shouldn't be cheapened. I'm not saying that any particular person or group or anything is doing it. I feel like that sometimes too. I see something and I'm like "Wow, that would be really awesome," but since I don't have money to contribute, I can't do anything with it. But, I still have that attitude that there's still a lot of cool things out there for regular members.

As for it being emphasized, there are so many threads about the memberships, etc. That's what I meant by emphasis. When I first got here and read about it, before I had a large chance to explore, I had the question of "So, what exactly is there for somebody who doesn't contribute?" Now, there could be a thread that lists all of that, and I just haven't seen it because there is so many different explanation threads. That's all I meant by that.

A specific example...I can't think of one right off the bat. I do know that a couple times in the RPG board I have tried to check stats in the RPG I was in from your link when you mentioned it being updated. It wouldn't let me because I wasn't a premium member. I had to go to the camp and find one of my posts to click on it, and only by doing that it would let me see stats. To me, that's something basic I should have been able to access since I was a part of the scenario, but it told me I couldn't because I wasn't a premium member.

If you think member status here is cheapened then you are very much misguided and need to read what I place above again.

If you look at the Compare page it is all there to see.

You must be trying to access something else since if you do not have permission then no matter what link you have you will not be able to get in.
