The Psychology Of Environmentalism

Why do you think the way you do about the environment and about environmental causes? Here is one reason (emphasis mine):

QUOTE
RESEARCH + TARGETED MARKETING + PARTNERSHIPS
= BEHAVIORAL CHANGE + POLICY SUPPORT

Cause marketers believe that the public will support their issues - once it has the right information.  In contrast, consumer marketers must give people a compelling reason to buy their product.  They describe a practical or emotional benefit in a way that relates to the daily life of their target consumer.

ecoAmerica applies a consumer marketing, rather than a cause marketing strategy to advance environmental protection.  In order to break through the cacophony of competing causes, busy personal lives and media overload, we need to focus on people rather than on issues.

Research: ecoAmerica has developed cutting edge psychographic research that explores how different groups of Americans think about the environment, and offers a framework for connecting environmental messaging to their closely held values and everyday concerns.

Marketing:  ecoAmerica uses its research to develop hard-hitting messages that make environmental protection tangible and relevant.  We deploy these messages through highly leveraged partnerships that reach their target audiences through the activities, products, media and institutions that are already part of their lives.

Results:  ecoAmerica will produce measurable changes in awareness, attitudes and behavior.  Specific goals are decided in the context of individual projects.

ecoAmerica harnesses its audience understanding to create partnerships with non-profits and for profits that reach out to new people and create lasting behavior changes that benefit our project partners and the environment.

Environmentalism Psychology The

I believe the way I do because it is unreasonable to believe that we make no negative impact on the environment. Industrialism has brought about greatly needed technology for the world, but also great pollution. The waste we produce is deadly to individuals in high enough doses. Why would we not think its bad for all other living things and our planet? To me, it only makes sense.

However, the environmentalist movement has become more of an anti-establishment movement in the last ten to fifteen years. To many uneducated people that really don't even know about the environment, they just like being anti-something. Being anti-government and anti-corporation is good, but its not part of environmentalism. To many young people just latch onto it because its so glamorous to be part of something big.
