Confusion sets in as those that stand up next to the camp fire light just gaze into the darkness as their injured comrades are now down with pain. You can barely see the tips of arrows come your way as the rest of you are under attack:
GM: Only those with shields will not have the +5 modifier against them
One arrow lands by the feet of Ice.
One arrow passes by the shoulder of Kron about a foot away.
One arrow goes way overhead passed Daphne.
One arrow goes way overhead passed Mud
One arrow sinks deep within Sir Remi as he falls to the ground.
One arrow takes off a chunk of flesh from Malice.
GM: Say what you will do now. Sir Remi is unconscious. Party Stats have been updated.
Ice yells to the others: "We can't fight an enemy we can't see! It is time to flee!
You all then attempt to mount your horses and help the fallen. This gives chance for your unseen enemy to launch another wave of arrows from the darkness:
GM: You are now moving so there is no +5 modifier
Malice takes an arrow, but it does not slow him down much
Cyroc takes another arrow that puts him out
The others are fortunate not to be hit.
You ride North with much haste and think that you are no longer in harms way, however, it is difficult to see and you are fortunate that this area is largely full of plains. You are not sure where you are exactly, but you can still see the Mountains of Death's Mouth to the South.
GM: Say what you wish to do now. Party stats have been modified.
You trot with your horse and keep heading North. Your weary state is not helpful as you travel most of the night until day break when you collect yourselves. As you check one another you notice that Sir Remi has bled to death - his frail body was just no match for his wounds and long ride. Cyroc also suffered the same fate from loss of blood.
Others are in gross pain with arrows and the like still within them they fall unconscious.
Saddened by this and your seemingly ceaseless defeat by the Bandits of the South you wonder if you are up to the task given you by Knight. You hit your fist against yourself for your blunders. Surely if you return to the Village now you will be seen as fit for the profession of King's Court Joker.
With the sun now breaking through the darkness you can estimate another six hours on the horses at the same pace to bring you within the Village center, but already you can see familiar friendly territory.
GM; Sir Remi and Cyroc are out of the game. Sabina is now on one HP. Say what you will do now.
You stop to rest and tend to wounds. After six hours you find that the sun is give the air warmth and you are hungry - 'Wouldn't a nice hot meal at the tavern be just right fer meh belly' you think to yourself.
GM: Say what you will do now
All of you feel the time is right to head back to the Village and you do so with blood and dead bodies. This bring much attention and talk amongst the folks for which you try to explain as best you can. You are eventually told that Knight wishes to see you at the Elders Chambers on the morrow.
GM: Now is a time regroup and decide why your strategies do not seem to work. New RPGers waiting to join will be added. Those that are dead will need to buried (this should be taken care of by the family of the deceased). Those that are injured will need to rest or visit a doctor. You will need to post party order again when you think you are ready to venture out. Party Stats has been updated.
Before the night is over Knight sends two soldiers to remind you and your party concerning the appointed time of meeting on the morrow. They indicate that he has also asked for you to return all that has been thus borrowed before.
GM: The soldiers await your response. Next game to start 30th May, 2005 so as to prevent too much delay for those who have already been waiting.
As the soldiers walk away they say to you...
"And be not late, Knight is not fond of tardiness, believe us we know of this for a fact."
Just about then Sabina coughs a bit of blood. All of this day is wearying her body. The others are also in need of treatment, a hot bath, a warm meal and best of a clean bath. You can most certainly tell as others walk on the other side of the passway, but then again that could be due to the dried blood on your clothes.
GM: Say what you will do now.
Knock on the Village Healer's door in haste and he agrees to see Sabina after announcing that it may be weeks and a lot of gold because of the sad state she is in. He also says in a wondering tone,
"Did I not see thee before? It seemeth to me as though thou art in danger much of thy days, but thy friend Joe seems to be improving."
You grunt an acknowledgement not willing to emphasize your constant need of petty health facilities that resonate with what is only one man who laughs you to scorn (your low wisdom gives you these ideas).
Morning...
You arise after a night's sleep that did not involve a shift, but your waking times was constant, maybe as a result of the trauma of being attacked by surprise. You consider if you should eat first as your stomach growls and your mouth waters with the need of hot food that is available in the tavern. Against your better judgement (which is to just eat) you make your way to the Elder's Chambers to meet Knight. He is busy talking with a soldier over a map spread out on a table - he sees your entrance and immediately turns towards you as if to strike down a foe with sword. Before giving you the chance to say anything he exclaims,
"Well, this be a sorry sight. Are ye in need of your mommies milk still or can ye handle this task? Where be the horse that I have so graciously given thee?"
His posture is erect and his demeanor serious with a twitch of sarcasim creasing the edges of his mouth. You try to utter an explanation, but his only interest is to say this,
"Our former dealings are no more, there will be no 50 gold pieces reward nor support from us. It is necessary that if thou wisheth to continue this fight then ye will have to bring thy own evidence of victory as we have given this task to others as well so victory will be to him that suceedeth rather than bounty."
He then pauses and it seems that you now have a moment of time to say whatever you wish.
GM: Say what you wish to say now within the next few hours (real time you have until 12pm EST) or it will be assumed that you wish to say nothing and Knight will continue.
