Berkeley Teachers Won't Grade Work

Teachers in Berkley, California are on a semi-strike. In response to not having received an increasement in their pay after two years, they refuse to do any work outside of school hours. They aren't grading homework, which means students aren't receiving homework, and they aren't returning phone calls to parents. Teachers are not taking part in extra activities.

I, personally, can see the issue from two sides: the teacher and the student. Teachers do have to make enough money to live off of, and they did not receive the money they were promised. At the same, I feel bad for the students because they're going to be the ones who truly suffer from all of this. It's a tough situations.

Work Grade Wont Teachers Berkeley

QUOTE
teachers are sticking strictly to the hours they"re contracted to work.....The union declared an impasse in negotiations last June and has not had a contract for two years.

They don't have a contract, apparently, yet they are claiming to only work hours contracted?

I have a real problem with unions "hijacking" the employment agreement between employee and employer. Perhaps it's necessary in some cases, but teachers are rather well paid compared to some professions, in my opinion, and I think each should be paid according to their ability and not by some ratification of a wage base by the union.

It's unfortunate on both sides. The teachers -- the good ones, at least -- seem to be regretful of the situation and miss doing their jobs in the manner they would prefer; the students and parents are just left to drift along in the uncertainty. Hopefully, they will find a resolution soon.
