I'm up to the challenge. I haven't examined the brackets in detail yet, but I'll post my picks when I do. As for Tennessee getting a 2 seed, I thought that was a bit of a reach, seeing that UNC gets a 3 seed and Michigan State gets a 6 seed. I also thought the selection committee was way too generous with their mid major picks, leaving out some power conference teams such as Cincinnati and FSU.
Some comments from yesterday's first round of action in the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
As I expected, there weren't very many upsets. There were, however, a lot of close calls, and a few OT games which ended up going to the higher seeded teams anyway.
So Syracuse wins their Big East tournament (the only reason they even qualified for the 64-team tournament). They get lucky enough to get a #5 seed out of the deal, and then they lose in the first round to Texas A&M. Note to the selection committee: don't give someone a high seed because they rode the wave in their conference tournament.
Biggest upsets were Oklahoma and Nevada losing. Syracuse wasn't an upset in my mind and neither was Alabama. I don't expect too many upsets today either.
Sorry Male, I never got around to finishing my bracket, I just got too busy at work. I did however pick the majority of first round games. I was ESTATIC to see Bradley smack Kansas University around!
Does it seem like the year of the upset? I have heard talk that this year has had more upsets that any year before it. Who would have thought that the likes of Bradley, George Mason, and Witchita St. would be in the sweet sixteen?
I have to pick the underdog in all of this and root for George Mason all the way! Who would have thought a #11 seed in George Mason from the Colonial Athletic conference would be in the Final Four? Only 4 of the thousands of Final Four fantasy participant on ESPN.com chose the correct Final Four teams. Indiana State back in the late 70's was the last non Power conference team to make the Final Four. Good luck to George Mason!
