I'm Mormon & My Job Requires That I... - Page 4

There are a couple of quotes from scriptures that apply to the scenario of being required to enter a nude bar.

The first (paraphrasing) is Jesus Christ stating that "when a man looketh upon a women and lusteth after her, he has already committed adultery within his heart". Jesus did not make any statement regarding the state of dress of the women. I personally think that it is possible to view a naked women and not have adulterous thoughts regarding her.

The other is in D&C where it says "let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly". If the bodygaurd in this example continued to let virtue garnish his thoughts, I personally don't think it is sinful to be there (based on the circumstances of being required to be there for his occupation).

Opinion:

I think that whether or not the bodygaurd should go into the nude bar and further more if he does whether or not doing so is a sin is based on intent. If he became a bodygaurd because he expected that every once in a while a client would require that he go with them into a nude bar then going into the bar would be sin. Even if he did not become a bodyguard for this reason but wants to go into a nude bar and finds a very good excuse then I would consider this also a sin. However, if he became a bodygaurd because it is a respectable occupation that he has a significant interest and can say within himself that he has no interest in going into a nude bar but is just entering the establishment in order to remain with his client, then I don't think there is an issue.

I personally have a strong work ethic so unless I had specifically discussed the issue and stated that I would not accompany a client into such establishments, I would go with him/her into the bar. However, as others have stated I would then discuss the matter with my employer to prevent it from happening in the future.

I would follow the client in the nude bar, I am there to do a job and then get out. I'm not there to socialize or have a good time and if I am really doing my job then I will be too busy wondering who might be potentially trying to hurt my client.

This is a GREAT example of how grey real life becomes compared to the ideals we all love.

There are so many situations in life where the choice is not between right and wrong (like in the Primary lessons), but instead it is between wrong and worse.

Go into the nude bar to protect your client or not?

Obviously a moral person does not want to go into the establishment. I'll take the leap of faith that people in this thread agree that nude entertainment is immoral.

The person you are assigned to protect is paying for a bodyguard for a reason -- their life is possibly in danger.

You refuse to go into the bar with them. They aren't going to wait for 2 hours on the street corner for your replacement to show up from the bodyguard company. They go into the bar without you there to guard them.

What happens if they are assassinated or killed while you are standing outside? What if other innocent people are also shot and killed? There's a good chance an assassin or kidnapper might not have done that in the bar IF they saw armed bodyguards in the bar with the client.

So in that hypothetical dilema, refusing to go in causes people to die. Sure, I know it's not your fault. You did not kill anyone directly. Murder is not a sin on your head, *BUT* your decision contributed to the environment.

I'm just throwing this out to keep the discussion going. It's an interesting topic.

But, as a man, would you not be affected by the naked women?

If , in this hypothetical situation, you would be continually willing to go into any situation that the client wanted, how good of an LDS member could one really be? I'm sure that this is not the first time and won't be the last that you are asked to protect people in immoral situations. What is the limit on what you would expose yourself to, in order to protect other people? Should there not be any limits on who you would protect, based on your own moral code?

Dbackers, I said my first focus would be towards protecting my client I did not say I am going to put a sign up advertising my services as a bodyguard for nude bars. As I understand it the bodyguards normally know the itinerary of the people they are protecting and it is usually agreed on before they leave together, so if there is something you don't like you tell them before.
