My Dad's Poetry

Here is one of my dad's poems. He has been gone 5 years now, it's hard to believe it. One of my sisters compiled a lot of pictures and poems in an album for all of us to share, and it's great to have this little bit of him.

Arms of Morpheus

Darkness rides in quiet waves
throughout
My troubled night

It trembles softly, so softly now,
blurs
and dims my sight.

So sweet it falls about me
caresses
and moves along

It's beauty should be captured
caged
within a song.

I love the quiet darkness
peaceful
time of thought

I feel in it a solitude
welcomed
and long sought.

Troubles fade & disappear
vanish
in the night

As darkness swirls its robes
preparing
for the flight.

My eyes now are heavy
closing
I approach reality

Peace, soft floating peace
arrives
Sleep becomes an actuality.

Thanks for sharing this with us, FarSeer! It was very moving. I had a question about the Morpheus reference. What is the meaning of 'Arms of Morpheus"?

Farseer, that's a BEAUTIFUL poem! Very touching, thanks for sharing it with us. When did he write this poem and in what circumstances?.

Offtopic but,
Malexander, don't tell me you are thinking that the Arm of Morpheus has something to do with the Matrix, right? wink.gif THAT would be way too much fanatism *laughs*

Morpheus was the Greek (and Roman, I think) god for sleep and dreams -- and the basis for the name of the drug "morphine" too.

I'm not sure about the circumstances of when or where he wrote this. I never knew that he wrote poetry until after he died, when my sister gave me this keepsake book of his life story. There are many poems, some (including this one) that are just written on scraps of paper with no reference to dates or anything.

Glad you enjoyed it. I'll be posting some others here, also.

Thanks for explaining that FarSeer. I didn't realize Morpheus was the name of a God. I feel silly for asking now. I look forward to some more of your father's poems.

My Dad's Poetry

The Ageless Oak

It stood alone
as a lord over peasants
for years indeterminable

Its mighty sweep
encompassing all
imposing, majestic

A prehistoric monument
conceived as a seed
sown by the winds

And then as the cycle
was complete
the wind again in the role of God

Reclaimed what it had sown
rending and smashing
the ageless oak

Birth
Life
Death
Complete

I like your father's poems, they are quite moving and inspirational. I'm sure your dad was quite the intellectual type of person. I hope the best for you regarding your father.
