A new CNN/Time/ORC International Poll indicates four in 10 Americans say they are willing to give up some civil liberties to fight terrorism, and suggests worries about terrorism have edged up after the Boston Marathon bombings.
The national survey shows that concerns about terrorism are up slightly, with 40% saying they worry that someone in their family will become a victim of terrorism, up 6 percentage points from a 2011 CNN poll conducted on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.
The survey also indicates that support for government monitoring of the Internet is down 8 points from right after 9/11, although there is still majority support: 55%. However, there is widespread and growing approval of the use of surveillance cameras in public places, with 81% saying they are in favor of it, nearly a 20 point jump from 2001.
The poll, conducted April 30, 2013, has a sampling error of +/-4 percentage points. Ref. CNN
The so called "War on Terror" is nothing more than an excuse to increase military funding and harass the Islamic people. Instead of invading Islamic territories and murdering people whom the US government claims to be terrorists, the country should be more concerned about why people hate it and should attempt to reconcile their differences without unnecessary bloodshed. There is no reason for the slaughter of thousands. There is no reason to take a life. Just because the Two Towers fell, it did not give the US government the right to slay innocent people. "War on Terror" should have never existed.
President Barack Obama, in a major counter terrorism policy speech today, said the United States "Is still threatened by terrorists," But "The threat has shifted and evolved from the one that came to our shores on 9/11."
Obama said homegrown extremism, lethal yet less capable al Qaeda affiliates and threats to overseas diplomatic facilities and businesses represent the "Future of terrorism."
"America is at a crossroads" In the fight against terror, Obama said. "What we can do -- what we must do -- is dismantle networks that pose a direct danger and make it less likely for new groups to gain a foothold, all while maintaining the freedoms and ideals that we defend. To define that strategy, we must make decisions based not on fear, but hard-earned wisdom. And that begins with understanding the threat we face." Ref. CNN
