Jehovah Witnesses and Child Abuse Cover-Up

In the past few months, several TV channels and newspaper had report numerous cases of child abuse within the congregation of Jehovah Witnesses. We know that most churches suffer with this evil but what's particularly interesting about this one is the amount of people who were victims of sexual abuse in this organization and 'supposed' cover-up about it leaving the victims helpless.

Well actually look at the Catholic Church at this very moment and what they are saying about some of their priests that have been doing this. However - I think your specific question with regards to the JWs doing this would be best answered by an elder of their church - but I do not know if they use the net

I have known many JW'S over the years, and have found them to be a good people.  Hard headed, but good.  I have been aware of thie problem for some time, and know that their headquarters does attempt to handle all their internal problems themselves.  Whether they be criminal, or civil, and they have very strict rules their members must follow, or else!  I have known some women have wanted a divorce, but had to be excommunicated for it to happen.  The man is always right, unless two witnesses say otherwise.  Go figure!  In any event, I am glad the Church is not this way.  I have seen Bishops turn their own ward members in to the authorities for serious crimes, before they hold a Bishop's court.  Which is the way it should be.  Just my thoughts..

I was working for a Jehovah's witness family, within their home when the cases of sexual abuse hit the headlines,in fact, I had been taking (and staying with) the 2 children that I looked after at the Jehovah's witness meetings twice a week for 9 months, as their parents couldn't attend. Everybody at these meetings were in uproar, as to the damage that was being done to their religion, and I can't state for certain, but it came across to me pretty strongly that their feelings were that things were being blown out of all proportion, and if any cases were found to be true, then they were to be dealt with internally within the organization, (but not through the media)

I was assured, by my boss who was an Elder, that the Jehovah's witness organization, did not in any way condone this, and that there was always going to be the bad minority in any religion, and that the people involved would ultimately be dealt with correctly.

I can't say for certain, but I felt that this being exposed through the media the way that it was, did have a detrimental affect on the society.

I am again all at once dismayed and disheartened with the JW's response to this situation. No religion in itself is bad. No religion is directly to blame for the molestation and mistreatment of children, they are not to blame for what happened, it is the individual responsibility.

However, once they cover it up, they become wrong. Like the Catholic Church, when they decided to sweep this under they table, they became, as an organization, to blame for everything that has happened by virtue of refusing to address it properly. Using the God to cover up what people have done is abhorrent. They should have gotten the police involved immediately and had this person arrested and removed from the church. Even Jesus said that people should submit to the government and obey the laws. Thus any spew they can give about the god not approving going to the police falls on deaf ears to those who know that kind of thinking only leads to people using it to get away with abhorrent crimes.

The Jehovah's Witness's become wrong, much like the Catholic Church, once they decided not to let the full extent of the law be taken. Allowing someone to get away with this is allowing it to happen again. People who do this type of thing didn't just "fall into sin" once, they are sick and will do it again. They need therapy, then time in jail for their crimes, and must be kept away from children. You don't have to cover up their crimes for them to still stay in the church. In fact, I would say the first step to repentance is admittance and confession and then submission to the laws of the land! Shame on the Jehovah's Witness's for making the same mistake over again. How many children have to be molested at the hands of church leaders before one of them stands up and says no more and allows the criminals to get their just desserts?
