Synaesthesia

Synaesthesia is the joining of senses. The associations of colors with words, or smells with sound. It is really amazing how several people can experience more than one sense where others experience only one, but such people exist. Here is an example of a synaesthete who can see and taste music:

QUOTE
"Whenever she hears a specific musical interval, she automatically experiences a taste on her tongue that is consistently linked to that particular interval," the scientists said in the journal. They tested E.S.'s ability by applying solutions tasting sour, bitter, salty or sweet to her tongue and asking her to identify the tone intervals, a difficult task that requires musical training. When the applied tastes corresponded with the intervals she was able to identify them quicker than other musicians. "We found that E.S.'s tone-interval identification was perfect," the researchers said.

I think that in some cases this can be acquired. If you consistently eat something during a certain experience then you will begin to associate the two together. Children are a good example of this acquisition. My children eat cheese and crackers everyday for lunch during `Dora the Explorer`. My child has told me more than once when I didn't have any cheese and crackers that he tastes cheese and points to his tongue.

The real interesting cases of this are random tastes associated with other events with out any prompting from repetitious events. I would be curious to know how many of these situation occur with no prior repetitious events.

Yeah, frequent associations maybe a contribution for synaesthesia, but in a case like this, it really is impossible to be based on that. In your example, one TV show was associated with one taste. But in most cases of synaesthesia, all things of one sense are associated with things of another sense. I don't think such a variety can be based only on experience, but rather that you have to be born with it.
