* Ensure that the place you are going to is reputable and that only the staff serve you drinks / food.

I never realized that there was little or no way to detect the drug even when looking for it. That is something that the news could also explain when reporting on these stories, kind of important to know.

Beyond that I wonder what sort of guy has to resort to such lengths just to enjoy the company of a lady in that way. She is already drinking and if you just keep up the small talk you have a pretty good chance with her at some point. That is pretty low to drug some one into paralysis just so you can be close to them, sheesh.

Also isn't there a chance that the victim will die from the drug, like never wake up?

This is the criminal sniper - the one who attacks without giving you chance to defend yourself. Anyone putting a drug in an unsuspecting victim's drink really is not in any mind of a concern for the person's welfare. Makes you wonder about what you are given when you go out - be very, very careful.
