Terri Schiavo Autopsy Results Inconclusive on Cause of Collapse

Clearwater, FL (LifeNews.com) -- A local county medical examiner released the result of the autopsy on Terri Schiavo's death on Wednesday. Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner Jon Thogmartin said that Terri was clinically brain dead and he ruled out physical abuse being the cause of her collapse in 1990. Much of Thogmartin's analysis was skeptical as he said too much time had elapsed to positively determine the cause of Terri's 1990 collapse. He indicated he did not think that bulimia played a part, but Terri's diet -- she drank considerable amounts of tea -- may have played a role. While Terri's estranged husband Michael and the media claim she collapsed because of a potassium imbalance related to the inordinate amount of tea she drank, Terri's family is concerned that Michael may have physically abused her. However, Thogmartin ruled out physical abuse saying early medical tests taken shortly after her collapse showed no signs of physical trauma. Thogmartin indicated that Terri was clinically brain dead and added that her brain had atrophied so much that it weighed only half of the weight of a normal human brain. However, a priest who was with Terri and her brother and sister just before her death, said the autopsy report doesn't change what happened to Terri. "Her physical injuries and disabilities never made her less of a person. No amount of brain injury ever justifies denying a person proper humane care. That includes food and water," said Father Frank Pavone, director of Priests for Life.

The parents are by no means leaving this to rest... and just as I thought... they will now claim that the autopsy will be based on discoveries of her last few weeks of ordeal with starvation.

Terri Schiavo's Family Responds to Medical Examiner's Report

Minneapolis, MN (LifeNews.com) -- Terri's sister Suzanne Vitadamo read a statement on behalf of herself, Terri's parents Bob and Mary Schindler and Terri's brother Bobby. Vitadamo said the Schindler family was "not challenging the findings" of the report, but she indicated they hoped to provide some perspective missing in the reporting on it. She indicated the Schindler family knew of Terri's severe physical and mental conditions prior to the report and said that it confirms that Terri was "brutally dehydrated to death." Vitadamo disputed the notion she said appears in media stories about Terri that her sister would not have wanted to live in her incapacitated condition or to be the victim of euthanasia. "There is absolutely no evidence that Terri wanted to die of dehydration, or that she believed that that the level of one's disability gives anyone the moral and legal right to end another's life," Vitadamo said. "Terri was dehydrated to death before our eyes. The moral shame of what happened is not erased because of Terri's level of disability," she added. Vitadamo said that society has "lost our compassion for the disabled" by virtue of saying people who are blind or mentally disabled, like Terri, are better off dying.

In addition to this the lawyer is also in the spotlight:

Terri Schiavo's Family's Attorney Disputes Autopsy Report

Clearwater, FL (LifeNews.com) -- An attorney for Terri Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, is disputing the findings of an autopsy report released yesterday claiming Terri had significant brain damage, was essentially blind, and was likely not physically abused before her collapse. The Schindlers say their daughter tried to speak with them and always noticed when they entered her hospice room. They also point to videos taken with Terri interacting with doctors and following a balloon over her head with her eyes. Schindler family attorney David Gibbs indicated the Schindlers want to have medical experts further analyze the autopsy report and they may take some sort of legal action afterwards.

If Michael Schiavo thought after his wife death that all would be over...he was very wrong....

Schiavo Outraged Over New Probe

(CBS/AP) Gov. Jeb Bush said Friday that a prosecutor has agreed to investigate why Terri Schiavo collapsed 15 years ago, citing an alleged time gap between when her husband found her and when he called 911.

Bush said his request for the probe was not meant to suggest wrongdoing by Michael Schiavo. "It's a significant question that during this ordeal was never brought up," Bush told reporters.

As CBS News Correspondent Wyatt Andrews reports, Michael Schiavo's attorney calls the new investigation political pandering by the governor.

"It's just shameful and disgraceful that Governor Bush has for years used this case to perpetuate his own agenda,'' said attorney George Felos.

In a statement issued by his lawyer, Schiavo called the development an outrage...

This is not anywhere near being over.... just read too, that he buried her cremated remains (telling her parents AFTER the fact) and putting on the memorial plaque that "he kept his promise".

He also put on the plaque the original date she collapsed 15 years ago as saying that was the day she left the earth.

This was a very dirty stab at the parents, and still... more news is developing about the parents seeking additional legal action against Michael Schiavo... and to tell you the truth, it's starting to appear that each party is trying to have the final word. I think is going to continue to go on.

There is also a lot more news about the autopsy report. Apparently, the parts that the media took out to report were more than a little bit biased. The world-renowned neurologist, who gave a prognosis that she could have been rehabilitated quite a bit, has issued a long, explicit answer to the media reports.

Here are the points I remember.
1. The autopsy report said that she couldn't swallow. Yet that is obviously incorrect, since she swallowed her own saliva. People who REALLY can't swallow can drown in their own saliva. There are also several eyewitness reports that people gave her water, and she did not choke or have any problems. She also passed a swallow test several years ago.

2. The autopsy said she was blind. Yet this is disputed by many people who reported that she followed people and objects with her eyes. The video that so many people have seen showed clearly that she followed the balloon with her eyes.

3. The autopsy claimed that her brain was atrophied (at least that is what the media reported). However, the autopsy actually claimed that the back part of the brain had atrophied (not disappeared), while the front part, including the frontal lobes, was in good shape.

4. The autopsy gave a certain figure for the weight of her brain after death. That figure is very close to the one that the neurologist estimated, when he gave his prognosis. The difference between the two weights could easily be accounted for by the fact that she died of dehydration.

The biggest point about all this is that the autopsy did not give any justification for murdering her by withholding food and water. Nor did it prove that she couldn't have been rehabilitated to some extent. All it did was give Mr. Schiavo sufficient evidence that he could never be convicted without reasonable doubt. (At least in my opinion)

Terri Schiavo's Family Reveals The Story Behind the Story in New Book

Clearwater, FL (LifeNews.com) -- More excerpts from the new book written by Terri Schiavo's family have come out. Written mostly from the perspective of Terri's mother, Mary Schindler, they tell the day of a family desperately wanting to care for the daughter and sister they loved but facing a daunting legal world that showed no compassion. The book, titled A Life That Matters: The Legacy of Terri Schiavo--A Lesson for Us All, is due out in bookstores on March 28. It challenges readers to hear the words and feel the emotions of the warm, intensely private family who never sought the media storm that enveloped them, or the devastating legal battle that broke their hearts. The Schindlers describe Terri's life and upbringing and discusses her marriage to Michael Schiavo, who abandoned the marriage after Terri collapse and eventually had two children with his girlfriend Jodi Centonze. The family talks abbot their lack of experience in and understanding of the legal world that soon devoured their lives. "I felt I was living in a parallel world, where a different language -- legalese -- spoke a set of incomprehensible rules," Mary Schindler relates, according to an AP report. "I felt no connection to this world, yet knew that Terri's fate would be decided by those rules, and not by anything that governed MY world, where humanity has less to do with the law than with the heart," she explained.

Exact moment of death murky, doctor says

A year ago, Terry Schiavo was dying in nearly every living room in America, her face a daily reminder that technology can keep us alive but can't solve our ethical dilemmas. A year later, Schiavo's husband and parents are back on TV pushing books with opposing views of her death. All of which makes this week's "Rethinking Death" conference at the University of Utah particularly relevant.
