It sucks because you do not have computers to keep in touch with friends across the globe. Besides if you were not good with a sword you choices were pretty much limited on what to do with your life.

Because of the Hundred Years' War, crusades and many other wars and conflicts all over the world. And because women's rights were so poor and because of the witch hunts in Europe.

The code of chivalry is very much my thing.
I was raised to respect a lady, hold a door for my elder, etc. I do every one of those things to this day.
In Medieval times though, I believe those things were probably more rare than we are lead to believe since there was such a total caste type system in place.
The nobles were not all that noble since they thought the peasants were below them, and ladies weren't treated like ladies except for possibly a few in the courts.

Obviously, I'm no expert on the subject since as I've stated in other threads, history is really not my interest but aside from the reasons stated above, people back then just plain had to work to hard! Compared to the life that most people lived back then... I'm a wimp!
