Airsoft

Does anyone here play Airsoft? I've been looking into it somewhat now, and it seems to be very cool. I like it, but it is expensive (some argue paintball is more expensive and vice versa). I'm from Miami, Florida, and there are many players and teams, but few places to play competetivley or to meet up. So Airsoft for me right now is most likely out of question, and as soon as there are more sites to play, I will consider it again. For now I'm sticking with paintball, as it is more popular and there are many sites to play.

My son bought an airsoft gun, and had a run-in with the police the same day, where he was eventually charged with possession of a firearm by a minor. The police confiscated his guns as well.

So, I strongly suggest that you check local laws before you get involved in airsoft.

Unless you are from New York or Conneticut, you can have Airsoft guns and they are perfectly legal. You can have them confiscated for not having them concealed in the public though.

I play airsoft, not as much as I would like to, I only got to go about two or three times last year, and since I'm getting married in a couple of weeks I don't know when I'll be able to go again. But yes, it's very fun, I have a Steyer AUG, and it's really fun to run around through the underbrush with that thing.

But yeah, you have to be careful, because the guns are made to be exact replicas of the real guns, so if you pull it out in public there is no way for a cop to know that it is an airgun instead of a real assault rifle.

Isn't there a bright orange marking somewhere on the gun that identifies it as an air-gun instead of a real gun? Yes, someone would be able to remove that and then be liable for the consequences. I thought I read about this somewhere before, but to be honest, I haven't looked into the sport that much so I may be wrong.

The orange marking is distinctive, but it is no longer of much help.

It seems that various gangs are now painting the orange stripe onto their illegally obtained guns, trying to fool police. It has worked at various times.

When the police dealt with my son, they told him that if he had had the airsoft guns concealed on his person, they would have taken him to jail for carrying a concealed weapon. It wasn't until the State Attorney General issued a statement that such toys could NOT be considered weapons under state law that our city stopped its persecution of these toys. There had been several felony convictions for owning the toys in the last two years.

(Yes, I did mean to use the word "persecution" rather than "prosecution". It was a deliberate choice by the DA to try to eliminate these toys from the city.)

Personally, I think they are great. I would love to have some for myself and my children, but after my son's experiences, there is no way. Maybe if we move out into the countryside, that will change.
