Safe Keeping SD Memory Cards
Is it okay to leave a memory card in the camera or should I remove it after each use?
I leave my memory card in the camera. I have heard of people taking them out, but I haven't found a good reason. After having it nearly two years, I have never taken it out except to print pictures from it and it still works fine. I haven't heard a good argument against it that anyone has actually validated with testing or personal experience, just something they heard from someone else who probably also heard it from someone else.
I have two minds about this for a couple of reasons:
1. Moisture (depending on where your camera is), but then again if moisture gets to your card it will get to your camera too.
2. I would definitely take out your batteries when you are not using your camera as it is easy for leaks to take place and then your card is gone as most cameras have the card very near to the battery compartment.
If you are taking enough pictures to have more than one memory card, get a hard-shelled case to keep the cards in. I would not use a soft-case unless nothing better was available. Waterproof is best, but more expensive. I'd look for a case that I could back my car or truck over without damaging the card. Some of the hard memory card holders are made to hold specific types of cards, so look at that, but most will hold several types these days.
Also, if you are taking your cards into hostile climates, such as on a boat, hiking or climbing in the mountains, kayaking, etc. Look for more secure memory card storage. I just bought one for myself that is very strong, waterproof and floats. It holds four cards and cost me $24.95 at a local camera store.
By the way, I buy gear both on-line and locally. Keeping the good will of the local shops is very helpful when you have either a question or problem, I've found.
