At Times, Romney's Bain Capital Profited Through Offshore Tax Havens, Closing U.S. Factories, Laying Off Workers

During his campaign, Republican candidate Mitt Romney has preached a message of economic populism by vowing to fight to keep jobs in America. We take a look at Romney¹s days heading up the buyout firm Bain Capital with Los Angeles Times reporter, Bob Drogin. He writes, ³From 1984 until 1999, Romney led Bain Capital, a Boston-based private equity group that earned jaw-dropping profits through leveraged buyouts, debt hedge funds, offshore tax havens and other financial strategies. In some cases, Romney¹s team closed U.S. factories, causing hundreds of layoffs, or pocketed huge fees shortly before companies collapsed.

The big day is tomorrow, does Romney have any chance of taking the votes and running with it?

Mitt Romney Captures Maine GOP Caucus, Closing in on McCain in Delegates

Augusta, ME (LifeNews.com) -- Mitt Romney captured the Maine Republican caucus vote on Sunday in a contest that received little in the way of media coverage in advance of the Super Tuesday primary voting. Despite the lack of attention, Maine Republicans provided Romney with a lion's share of the vote and another 18 delegates. With 68 percent of the votes counted there, Romney won 52 percent of the Republican vote compared to 21 percent of John McCain. Ron Paul, who campaigned extensively in the state, received 19 percent while Mike Huckabee received the support of six percent of GOPers there. Romney's win gives him a total of 77 delegates in the primary election race. McCain leads with 93 delegates and Huckabee is third with 40. Most of Romney's delegates have come in states like Maine -- including Wyoming and Nevada -- where Republicans caucused and received little attention. Romney also won the Michigan primary.

The polls have been wrong before in this primary and caucus process, but if it is true that Romney can take California, it does provide a gimmer of hope. He needs to take California and another couple of smaller states and Super Tuesday will end up being a wash for he and McCain. He is still pretty far behind in the overall polls however, and that doesnt bode too well for the long term outlook for the campaign. The biggest thing he has going for him is that there is a pretty strong dislike of McCain even in his own party. However, as far as being a more conservative conservative...there really isnt a whole lot of difference between he and McCain. I can truly say that in his current position his strategy is really good for going into Super Tuesday - Get California!

Romney Mitt

I was actually surprised that he took Vegas, but as I said earlier in this Thread I would be very surprised if he won, the religious weight and change of position on a few issues is not playing well.

Mitt Romney

The abortion things is actually a very big deal for the religious right and they are a strong voting block. You really do not want to be sending mixed messages in that direction, because it will cost you in the end. I think that, even more than his religious beliefs, could hurt him the most with the nomination process. I really think that Romney does project more as a conservative than McCain, but it is not that much more. Where Romeny is hurt pretty badly is the abortion issue. His record on voting is one that doesnt show a clear position on the subject. McCain has this covered. However, McCain has too many bills that look something like this: The McCain - (insert your favorate liberal democrat here) Bill. Many of those bills that have gotten through not looked at in the brightest light within the republican part and is why he has a fairly good sized group of detractors from within.

As I said, Romney might not win, but he is running smartly and the strategy should be recognized as being smart. He is one that could possibly do even better next time...if there is a next time (this one is costing him a personal fortune!).

He'll have another chance in 2012. This race puts his name in front of people's minds, and whoever wins will have to really put forth a good showing to stay in office for a second term. When it comes time for a new election, if people will be wanting change, Romney may have a chance.
