Found a great article that describes in detail how a new Pope is chosen. I find it very interesting and insightful, as I had no idea how one was chosen. I look forward to seeing this process in action.

Conclave Chosen Pope New How
Thanks for the article Konquererz. Believe it or not, I have a nugget of information to add to the article.

Apparently this was instituted because in the olden days, there were times when the Cardinals could not agree on the next Pope. This 'lockout' from the rest of the world ensures that the decision process does not go on indefinitely. It was intended to starve the Cardinals to the point where they would be forced to agree and come to a decision. Now, I don't know if this is still true. The article says they have no form of communication with the outside world, but my guess is they still have minimal food and water available. We wouldn't want Cardinals dying because of the process even though that was a possibility when the tradition was started.

I have heard that in the 13th century, there was a conclave meeting lasting for more than two years! It's really hard to bring the results to a two thirds advantage if they weren't so in the first place, in my opinion.

I suppose it isn't necessary to do this any longer. It was done because many of the Cardinals lived in squalor conditions elsewhere and had no great motivation to get the job done and return home. So, they made it less than comfortable to encourage quick decisions. Now, Cardinals don't live in such conditions so there is no worry along these lines.

Yes, I read that after my post and thought it was interesting they decided to break away from tradition. Maybe it is a sign of how the Papal decision will be made? Another aspect of the voting that will be different this time, is that in addition to the white smoke, the Vatican will ring the bells to announce that a decision has been made. Apparently, there was confusion in the past about the color of the smoke rising from the chimney so this will clear that confusion.

Pope Benedict XVI has changed the rules of the conclave that will elect his successor, allowing cardinals to move up the start date if all of them arrive in Rome before the usual 15-day transition between pontificates. Benedict signed a document, issued Monday, with changes to the Vatican law governing the election of a new pope. The date of the conclave's start is important because Holy Week begins March 24, with Easter Sunday March 31. In order to have a new pope in place for Easter, he would need to be installed by Sunday, March 17. Ref. USAToday

The conclave to elect a new pope will begin Tuesday, the Vatican press office says.
There will be 115 cardinal-electors taking part in the conclave, the Vatican confirmed. Only those younger than 80 are eligible to vote.
Benedict XVI's time as pope came to a historic end last week, as he became the first pontiff in six centuries to resign. Ref. CNN
