Interesting point. Who is the government to decide who you can and can't marry? Is that really what we want, the government making those kinds of decisions? Not me. I wouldn't marry a cousin, but hey, live and let live I say.

The government in the US says you cannot marry someone that is your cousin? If so, what about second or third cousins?

I had to go back and read the first post and I quoted where it says that 26 states DO ALLOW it. I actually didn't realize it, I thought it was illegal to marry a first cousin anywhere. I wonder if the areas like Kentucky, Arkansas and close around there allow it. I know that when there is that "back woods" mentality that someone else mentioned it is usually "said" to be attributed to that, but who knows if that is all true either. The other thing, I think that a lot of those birth defects like that are in common family marriages aren't they? Like more and more of the same family marries, not just one set of cousins? I do not know that for sure, I am wondering.

I would like to know if Alaska is on that list--we have a lot of Native Alaskan Indian/Eskimo people and I think they intermarry quite a bit.

I don't think it is illegal to marry 2nd or 3rd cousins JB, but I might be wrong on that too! Like I said, I didn't think you could marry a first cousin anywhere in the US. I wonder from your question if they do NOT have a say in your country?

I personally am glad the government says first cousins should not marry. How many birth defect do we need to willingly chose to cause? Be nice if they charged people for drinking when pregnant also.

Once past first cousin the chance of mating causing issues reduces greatly but I f I recall correctly is run in all the odd numbered cousins. That means first third fifth after that it is so minimal it does not matter.

Remember it is not just physically issue but mental as wells that are caused by mating too close to ones own gene pool.

I believe that if 1st cousins want to marry let them. There could be some defects but other times the risk is lower thus allowing for the marriage and children to happen. It could be a situation that is becoming more relevant today that your first cousin is not all that related to you due to divorce and remarriages

I agree legality of first cousins should be addressed as to be first cousins it is in the blood line only that counts. If this allowed (blood line first cousins) then what next mother and son?
