Domains That Go .xxx

Web to put all its pornography in one basket
By Holden Frith, Times Online

The internet is to get a new domain devoted entirely to pornography. Adult sites will be encouraged to move from their current .com or .co.uk sites to new addresses ending with .xxx.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has approved the creation of the new domain, which is intended to make it easier for people who wish to avoid such content to filter it from their search results, and for parents to block their children's access to inappropriate material.

Since so many porn sites try to entice people into them, I doubt that all, or even most, will use that extension.

I agree with Nighthawk. Many sites deliberately try to trick you to their site for the shock value.

Another reason this isn't likely to be successful is that many sites use names that give no hint of their content. This is done, I believe so that those who visit them are protected when someone looks at their history file. It isn't obvious they have been on porno sites. If you move them all the .xxx then at a glance it becomes obvious.

I have to agree with both Nighthawk and FBC. The majority of porn sites use misleading URL's to get people to visit them. Sure, there will be a few honest sites that may utilize the .xxx domain to identify themselves as adult sites, but most will not. Maybe if someone (no idea who) were to enforce this rule by assigning fines to those who do not move to .xxx, then there may be some merit in it. That in itself, though, will be very difficult to implement and police.

It seems that Canada is thinking along the same lines, but they must realize that those who promote porn are usually not upstanding law abiding citizens, but filthy persons who do not care if a child sees it or not.

TORONTO FIRM SCORES RED LIGHT DISTRICT FOR INTERNET PORN
A Toronto-based company has initial regulatory approval to create a red-light district on the web, but critics said it wouldn't necessarily stop porn from popping up in random surfing.

This would be a great idea and I think it should be enforced somehow; the only problem it that I don't know how/who could do it. On the other hand, I guess there will be always some sites which will disrespect those "orders".

Raul, unless they become like China (see Chinese Gag Thread), it is virtually impossible to 'enforce' the internet since if they (the culprits) get shut down in 'x' location they simply have to go to another place to set up again. I do believe that organized or 'official' porn sites will make the move, but those that just post it for banner ad allocation will not care in the least since they need to surprise you in order for you to see their banner ad and thus make a buck off of it.
