CHOCOLATE -- THE DARK, THE LIGHT, THE BITTERSWEET
Summer isn't the typical time to think chocolate, unless you're watching Johnny Depp floating on a river of it in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." (That's a two-for-one deal on eye candy.) Compared with the 1971 version, called "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," this remake follows today's trend in chocolate: a bit more dark and bittersweet.

TAKE TWO CHOCOLATES AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING . . .
"Let's see what the damage is, shall we?" asks young Willy Wonka's dentist dad, who preached against candy in all forms, in the film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I had one question about it:
Why didn't they stick with the orginal name, ie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?
The reason I ask is because the focus of the movie is about Willy Wonka, not Charlie! Yes Charlie inherits the factory at the end, etc, but the movie revolves around the magical and wonderful world that Willy Wonka has created in his chocolate factory, and how he weeds out the naughty boys and girls in the hopes of finding his successor. Plus he is a very peculiar character. I'll still probably go see the movie, but I was disappointed in the title change. Anyone else agree with me?
I think they had to change it because there is already one movie with the name of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." The name has to be different, doesn't it?
I have seen the movie, and frankly, I was a little creeped out. Johnny Depp does a fair imitation of Michael Jackson, and the character of Willy Wonka now has an icky persona. While most of the movie sticks very closely to the original book, there are a few digressions and branches that I thought were weird.
The Oompa-Loompas are all played by ONE actor - they all have the same face. One of the scenes with the songs the OL's sing about the "bad" kids has the OL's as a heavy metal rock and roll band that is way too over the top for a KIDS' movie, in my opinion.
Willy's father plays a part, but I don't remember that from the book (although, I must admit I haven't read it in years). He's depicted in the beginning as a *really* obsessive dentist. and the braces and headgear that Willy wears are positively monstrous.
This is NOT for very young children, in my opinion.

Personally, I think the name is more appropriate. As a child I always thought the book was more about Charlie than Willa Wonka. Charlie is really the central character in my opinion. I think the book really focused on him. He was the poor boy who won a ticket. You didn't get nearly as much background info on the other kids as you did Charlie and you seemed to get his perspective on everything. I thought the book was more about he being such a good person, with such good family is why he was ultimately successful, I.e., the lucky inheritor of such a great fortune.
I liked the movie too. I thought it was much better than the first. In fact, I really didn't like the first movie at all. In my memory, Willie wasn't such a wonderful loving man as he was portrayed in the first movie, but was more the dark character portrayed in the second.
I do not believe there was any mention of Willie's father or his childhood in the book, but it has been a very long time since I read it too. I read it as a child.
I suppose I should read the book then, because, from my impression from the first movie, the story was more about Willy Wonka and him looking for an heir to the chocolate factory. I spoke with a co-worker who took his kids to see it, and he mentioned some of the same things that FarSeer and FBC talked about. He too was quick to point out that the story is about Charlie and not Willy Wonka. Guess I'm outnumbered.
When I first saw Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory I was only 6 or 7 yrs old or maybe younger and to tell you the truth, that movie seriously scared me then! I mean kids turning into a big blue ball, being sucked up a tube, flying up into a ceiling with the possibility of being chopped to pieces with fan blades and that scary tunnel...I'm amazed that it would even be considered a children's movie. Honestly, I'm not joking! That is the ultimate horror movie of my childhood..that and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.
Now that I'm older and just a pinch wiser, I was able to enjoy this new movie alot more. I agree, it was interesting how much he resembled Michael Jackson at times but if it wasn't for Johnny Depp, I don't think that movie would have been as good! I thoroughly enjoyed it! I didn't imagine it would have amused me as much as it did! Or maybe my sense of humour is quite lacking..
Even if the book didn't feature Wonka's childhood or father much, I thought it added alot more depth to the story in the movie. It made Wonka more human and understandable. I prefer Johnny Depp's take on the character of Willie Wonka and though Charlie maybe the central character in the tale, Mr Wonka was by far the most entertaining!
By the way, I agree with you to some extent Malexander. The movie is named "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" but the poster in the cinema for the movie featured ONLY a picture of Johnny Depp portraying Mr Wonka and printed in big bold letters "johnny depp". Somewhere in the bottom I guess was the Charlie actor's name but no picture or such to suggest that anyone named Charlie was involved in the film. I remember wondering then "where's Charlie?"
