Are the Boy Scouts good or bad mentally for your child? Boy Scouts are good in the terms of learning skills and moral values. But a lot of kids make fun of the kids who are Boy Scouts. This might lead to a bad social (school) life. Anyone have any opinions?

I believe that Boy Scouts is an excellent organization in every way. At the same time, I believe that it is NOT for every boy. None of my boys are interested in the scouting part. But they still have fun at some activities, and the values and skills that are taught there are vital to the support of a moral, civilized society. IMHO.

I believe the Scouts have a lot to offer, but in this day and age you have to rigorously scrutinize who the Scout Leader is as this report points out:

I think both the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts are very reputable organizations. The problems with leaders being caught up in situations as mentioned above are not just things to be cautious of with the scouts, but with any child related organization.

Children will make fun of children regardless of whether or not they are in the scouts. It gives them ammunition, yes, but they will tease kids regardless. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but I don't think parents shouldn't place their kids in these programs for that reason.

Scouts teach dignity, discipline, and responsibility. I think one reason kids get picked on is because a lot of them learn respect and they utilize it. Because of that, that's usually where the teasing comes in.

That's a difficult one, and it certainly doesn't seem fair that your boys have to miss out on an activity they enjoy either.
I personally think that you should have a quiet word with the Bishop, but in a gentle manner, explaining your concerns. The Bishop shouldn't be able to hold this against you or your boys.
What you've got to think about here, is if it were the other way round, and it was your boys who had done the 'offending', you would be the first to be pulled in for a discussion.
It shouldn't matter what role the boys parents play in the church, he has still done something that is 'inappropriate'.
I hope you manage to get it sorted!
best wishes, Diane.

If your child is going to be "harmed" because of being teased by being in the BSA, then he needs some serious character building (which is what the BSA is all about). We can't go through life dependent on what others think of us. We need to train our children to learn to become self-sufficient, and stand up for that which is good regardless of society's view of good and bad.

Absolutely, Boy Scouts when performed as expected by the BSA is good for our youth. And I'd strong argue that it IS for everyone. Because it helps to create a well-rounded youth, as opposed to the X-Box geeks (or jocks) who don't have a broad view of life and necessary skills.

According to Scouting.org: "The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated to provide a program for community organizations that offers effective character, citizenship, and personal fitness training for youth.

Specifically, the BSA endeavors to develop American citizens who are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit; have a high degree of self-reliance as evidenced in such qualities as initiative, courage, and resourcefulness; have personal values based on religious concepts; have the desire and skills to help others; understand the principles of the American social, economic, and governmental systems; are knowledgeable about and take pride in their American heritage and understand our nation's role in the world; have a keen respect for the basic rights of all people; and are prepared to participate in and give leadership to American society."

Is there anyone out there that wasn't made fun of for some reason when they were kids. I know I was. Kids unfortunately make fun of kids.

Back to point. The Boys Scouts is a good organization and is teaching boys to be men of integrity, men of honor, and men of God. If someone does not want their children exposed to those teachings they just shouldn't put their kids in it. Moreover, they definitely shouldn't fight against the organization. If they don't like it, they just shouldn't take part in it.
