I cannot believe people will actually be 'offended' because of it. I find it personally rather stupid than offensive, stupid in the sense of why someone will want to even buy a shirt that says that....anyhow, I heard the statement of 'I can't, I'm mormon' hundreds of time in my life, I don' t see it as a big deal.

I like to say "I don't" rather than "I can't" because I'm Mormon. It shows that I willingly abstain or refuse -- because I have the choice. Not because I'm restricted, but because I choose not to do whatever it is.

Nicely said. To that I'd also add that there's sort of an additude behind that phrase that turns it into something universal. By that I mean it sounds like "I can't do anything," which is not exactly the best of additudes. Like you said, we aren't forced into anything. We choose our own path. At first I may have thought I was following my parents wishes, but when I ran into several bits of "not so good" media (books in particular) I learned that I wanted to follow the church's beliefs.

Here is some more commentary on the issue. Basically, I agree that it comes down to the fact that the only reason there is a controversy is that so many people are "humor challenged". Of course, the controversy has provided lots of free advertising to the entrepreneurs.

Ouch! laugh.gif My first thought was how can I get one! I think it is funny! I love it! In fact, I have said it many times myself. And, even though it is a choice, I still view it as a can't. Believe me, I would rather drink coffee than not, but I can't, I'm Mormon. What is wrong with admitting that the reason I abstain is religion? If not for religion, why would I abstain?

Now, I would never wear it, but I did think it was funny. If I were in my 20's and into wearing slogan type shirts like I did when I was in my 20's, I would definately buy one.

Because you have morals, values and principles regards of your religion. There are people out there who are not LDS and they live the Word of Wisdom better than any LDS member. Religion is not the reason for abstaining in my opinion.
Regards to the shirt, the word 'can't' sounds like if someone puts a gun on your head and they are forcing you from abstaining of those things.

My understanding of 'can't' is based on what you are not able to do because you have no choice in the matter.

Offtopic but,
Most people make that mistake when they want to ask permission for something and say... 'Can I have this...' when what they really should be saying is 'May I have this...'.

So using the word 'can't makes it sounds like because you are Mormon your ability to choose has been taken away. However, above all I like Nighthawk's response best...

laugh.gif I like that, and it is so true. Members will make more out of this than they would seeing about feeding the poor and needy. Something like this is sure to attract attention and may even result in baptisms - yes, I have seen crazy things happen.
