Prince Charles 'orders Harry To Auschwitz'

What in the world this 'kid' was thinking???!!! rolleyes.gif It made me really ANGRY!!!

Prince 'orders Harry to Auschwitz'

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Britain's Prince Charles has ordered his son Harry to visit Auschwitz after he caused outrage around the world by wearing a Nazi uniform to a party, the Sun newspaper reported on Friday.

The paper said heir-to-the-throne Charles was "incandescent with rage" with the 20-year-old grandson of Queen Elizabeth and wants him to make a private trip to the concentration camp to learn more about the Holocaust.

Jewish groups had demanded Harry go the camp in southwest Poland to make amends for wearing a swastika armband and an army shirt with Nazi regalia at a costume party on Saturday.

The Sun, which broke the Nazi gaffe story on Thursday, quoted an unnamed royal source as saying that Prince Charles also told his older son, William, to travel with Harry to Auschwitz...

Auschwitz Harry orders Charles Prince

I honestly don't think he did this on purpose or to offend anyone, but he should have used better judgement as he is in the public eye. He sounded sincerely apologetic and this could be considered some of the growing pains he will have to suffer while developing into the heir to the throne. Sending him to see the concentration camps will give him a better perspective of what happened in the War if he was not aware of it already.

Prince Harry is just a 20 year old kid in my opinion. It was in bad taste, but it is definately the sort of thing many 20 year olds would do. Unfortunately, if you aren't Jewish and you are in your 20's you probably don't give a whole lot of thought to the Holocaust. He probably just approached it that he was wearing an old uniform from an old war. Since he has military plans, this probably influenced his decision to wear a military uniform rather than go as a lion or a bear for example.

In fact, Prince William was with Harry when he made the costume choice and apparently he didn't recognize it would be a mistake either. He definately seems to be more level headed in general that Harry. I think this is really just a case where WWII is so far removed in history for someone in their 20's that it is no different than the civil war would have been for my grandmother.

I think having them go to Auswitz is a good way to help them understand why this has caused the uproar that it has, but I also feel to some extent it is being blown a bit out of proportion.

Now, if Prince Charles had worn the uniform, I would feel differently. He has enough years under his belt that I think he should know better.

Well..I have to disagree with folks on this one wink.gif. I strongly feel that he knew exactly what he was doing and he did it to call attention once again. Harry have been involved in a lot of issues (drugs, dishonesty acts, etc), so I cannot justify his actions in ANY way. First of all, he is 20 years old...he is not 12 years old people. He goes to one and have gone to the most prestigious school in the world where I AM SURE they have taught about Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust. Even the MOST ignorant person who does not have formal education knows what a nazi is...so the excuse that he is just a 20 years old is a poor excuse in my humble opinion. Now, Malexander is saying if he should have used better judgement as he is in the public eye...what does it mean? that just because he is in the spotlight his choice of custom was not appropiate?.
Tena, it may be the case that 20 years old would do things like that...but be careful, only the real irresponsible, ignorant and dumb ones.

Yes, this is basically what I am saying. If I went to a costume party and wore a Nazi outfit would it be as big of a deal? Maybe some Jewish folks who were in attendance may not find it flattering, but I don't think someone would make a scene about it, especially if they didn't know me. If George W Bush goes to a costume party and does the same, then it's on every newspaper around the world. Being in the public eye means that you have to be more aware and sensitive of what you do, because it affects and influences more people than you think it does. It's like these basketball players in the NBA who think it's ok to smoke weed, because their excuse is "I'm not a role model for anyone" Here's a news flash for you buddy, how many kids out there are wearing your jersey?

I don't think it is a matter of not knowing what a Nazi is so much as not having a full grasp of what was really done...from an emotional level not just from an intellectual level. So, even though he may be aware of the history, to him, it is probably ancient history. This war ended almost 60 years ago. To a 20 year old that really is pretty ancient.

However, someone at work pointed out to me that since Great Britain was attacked themselves by the Nazi's he should have known better. That may be true. His grandmother lived through the bombing of Londaon.

However, as a US citizen, I know if someone I knew showed up at a party dressed as a Nazi, it probably wouldn't phase me in the least.

Now, I do not mean to offend anyone but just state how I think and feel about this matter. I know so many descendants of people who have survived the Holocaust and I have studied this issue for years, that this topic have become a very 'passionate' for me. But you all know, I mean no harm wink.gif

Yes, of course would be a big deal!!! Are you asking me seriously?. I do not think it has nothing to do whether you are jewish or not. I am not a jewish and personally I think if someone appreciates life and cares about humanity in general, then they would feel offended if they see someone walking through with a nazi custome whether is Bush or the guy down the road. The Holocaust is not a matter to make a joke out of it or take it lightly. The nazis with Adolf Hitler in the lead is responsible for the BRUTAL killing of 6 million HUMAN BEINGS....wait....now...is it me or am I here explaining why is this wrong? *shaking head*. Sorry, but I cannot believe it. undecided.gif

I also must agree with LDS that he knew what he was doing. I also do not necessarily agree that the excuses being made for him based on his age are adequate. I am 20 years old, and my heart breaks whenever I think about what happened in the Holocaust. I have only ever met one other person in my lifetime close to my age that felt completely calloused towards it.

I wrote my senior paper on the concentration camps, and as part of our Senior Project we had to give our report in an oral form. Before I was finished with my presentation, I had a class of 25+ high school seniors in tears.

I think it's an unfair assumption that just because people are younger and were not around during the time of the war that we don't care about what happened. I've seen more adults with an apathetic attitude towards things of this nature than "kids" my own age.

When people are in the spotlight, then yes, whether they like it or not, every major mistake they make in their life is going to be recorded. The world will know about it. I feel sorry for them because we all do make mistakes, but we have the gift of privacy, for the most part. I know if my life were in the spotlight, that would make me more aware of the fact that my every move is being recorded. I may not like it, but I would be more likely to think twice about anything I did.

Harry has been known to continually be getting into trouble, so it's hard for me to look at this incident as his not knowing he was doing something that would be frowned upon.

I do agree with what malexander is that on a public level, if a regular person were to do the same thing, it would not have been looked at with as broad of a scale. Yes, while people on that local level would have possibly made mistakes, I doubt it would have been published in international magazines and on international news.
