Prayer An Excuse For Inaction

Do you believe that some humans use prayer a a means of inaction? For example, if something bad is taking place around them, then they use prayer only as a means to make it stop rather than the resources around them to stop the bad from continuing. Another example, someone next door is hungry, so you pray that they will get food rather than give them some from your own stock.

A view that would be put forward by Nietche I am sure who for the most part viewed religion and God as a crutch. Not just atheist but Anti Theist. I am sure that many use religion as a coping mechanism. A firm belief in the Almighty allows the "Let Go, Let God" phrase actually have impact and solace. However those that use prayer as the only action when other means are at their service, are doing their religion a disservice. Not unlike thos who just donate monies to various causes and figure they have done their part.

I suppose there are some people who practice the Let Go, Let God principal to extreme, but I think that principal is only to be applied when you find yourself in a situation where there really is nothing more you can do.

I believe if one uses prayer as an excuse to do nothing, they are sadly misguided. I believe our prayers are answered, but only after we have done all we can do. In fact, sometimes the answer might be an instruction to take a particular action.

Inaction Excuse Prayer

There are some religions that refuse all medical treatment, and believe they can heal any illness or malady with prayer alone. I'm sure you've read the stories from time to time in the news when someone has died with this method...

I agree with Tena that we have to sometimes "let go" after we have done all we can do, and that we really need to do all we can do before we get to that point. As far as donating money to a cause, sometimes that *is* all you can do, and then you pray and "let go." For instance, I can't do much for the survivors of Katrina, but I can donate to the organizations that *can*, and then I can pray and "let go."

Inaction Excuse Prayer

I believe that when we lay a desire or a need before God, He will take care of it. His way of taking care of it is, in my belief, oftentimes guiding us on the actions WE need to take. It's just like any Earthly parent and their child: They raise their child, they guide them, they eventually have to let go to a degree to allow them to make their own decisions, and when we're stranded in another city with no money, they send us a check. wink.gif

I do believe that God has the ability to snap his fingers and in an instant, our every ailment is gone. But if He did that, what would we learn? What would we gain?

Those people who expect God to do it all by Himself are mislead, I believe. He has the ability, but we have to take initiative.

Sometimes, all you can do is pray. When that is the situation, then I believe we have to give it all we've got. God will show us what we need to do, and He will take care of what is beyond us. I love the saying that God will not give us more than we can handle. God will always provide a way for us out of a bad situation, we just have to be willing to accept His way and His way of showing us.

If I am diagnosed with an incurable disease, Heaven forbid, and there's nothing I can do to keep from dying, I have two options. One is to completely get angry, etc. The other is to seek out God and find what he wants me to do with the remainder of my life. I may not be thrilled with the idea of a terminal disease, but I do have to trust that God has a purpose for it.
