
Empire State Building Shooter Killed
New York authorities say the gunman who opened fire Friday outside the Empire State Building had been fired from his job a year ago. The person the gunman shot and killed was a former colleague.
Police who killed the gunman may have hit several of the eight people wounded, Mayor Michael Bloomberg says. All those wounded are expected to recover. Ref. CNN

Parts of the U.S. Capitol are being cleared after authorities announced suspicious packages on the first and third floors of the Hart Senate Office Building and a suspicious envelope in the Russell Senate Office Building at the office of Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama.
Capitol Hill Police are questioning a man with a backpack in the area of the Hart office building. The man raised suspicion with the content of his backpack and how he responded to police questions, two Capitol Hill police officers said. The man's backpack contained more sealed envelopes, one of the officers said.
One of the Capitol Hill police officers on the scene said the backpack is being X-rayed. Ref. CNN
Man arrested over alleged Minnesota 'local terror plot':
Federal agents in Minnesota say they have foiled a terror plot after arresting a man with pipe bombs, guns and Molotov cocktails in his home. Buford Rogers, 24, was arrested on Friday and faces one charge of being a convict in possession of a weapon. Ref. Source 8
Secret Service confirms the White House mail screening facility intercepted a letter addressed to the White House that was similar to letters previously addressed to Mayor Bloomberg in New York.
