Independence Day

Since this is an international forum it is obvious that everyone will celebrate their country's independence on a different day, but you can share with us when it is and what you normally do or intend to do on that day.

Day Independence

In the United States we celebrate Independence Day every year on July 4th. This year the 4th falls on a Sunday, so the federal government and a myriad of other businesses will be closed on Monday as well.

This Independence Day will be celebrated with the 4 F's: Food, Fun, Fellowship, and Fireworks. Several members from a local Yahoo! group will be meeting at the community college. It's going to be a pot luck meal and I still don't know what my family is going to bring. At least there's still a few days left to come up with an idea.

My little town celebrates the 4th on the 3rd. The town 16 miles north of us will have fireworks on the 4th, and the town 8 miles to the south of us will do likewise. So for the people of these three towns to be able to see lots of fireworks the events are split.

I live on a hill above the bay where the fireworks will be *shot* from, so I stay home. Sit on my porch, or sometimes I am coaxed by one or two of my neighbors to go sit on their patios (they are right on the cliff edge and have wonderful views). One neighbor has a free-for-all. I have to put out dining room chairs to prevent her *guests* from blocking my driveway and from trampling all over my lawn and flowers. It is quite the druggie-drunken *party*.

I stay home on the 4th also. There really is no sense in driving to either of the other towns to try to see their fireworks. There is no parking, and far too many of those other drivers are drunk. There are more car accidents, car clouts, purse snatchings on this night than any other night save New Years Eve. So why go?

I would rather have a neighborhood pot luck. Where we set up tables & chairs, fire up several bar-be-ques and we all gather outside to eat, visit and watch the fireworks. No cars coming and going on our little dead-end road, no extra dogs barking and leaving *presents* and digging up the flower beds, no drunken-doped up brawls. Perhaps next year.

Day Independence

Our funny little town here has a parade and a street fair, which I will probably take my daughter to but my folks won't go. (they don't like crowds). There will be fireworks from a local park, close enough that we can see them from home. And we will barbeque in our backyard and fix "party" food This is our first year in the neighborhood we live in so I'm not sure how the neighbors will be partying -- although I do know that a few people around the block have had parties for other things, and they get quite noisy quite late. To have them all partying at once should be interesting.... Good thing we have Monday off work!

Day Independence

A couple of weeks before Independence Day, Detroit and Windsor, ON, have a huge fireworks extravaganza. It is a joint celebration of Independence Day for the US and (I think) Canada Day.

Other than that, we mostly just have various types of picnics and fireworks for the 4th.

I was in Utah this weekend (flew back on the 4th), and most of the area had their fireworks on the 3rd. However, we were all so exhausted that we didn't even bother this year. But in Provo, Utah, they have a great fireworks and concert event combined. They also have a huge parade in the morning.

Last year, they had Martina McBride and Sean Hannity at the Freedom Festival. This year, Reba McEntire and Sean Hannity headlined the event.
