MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian village was left baffled Thursday after its lake disappeared overnight. NTV television showed pictures of a giant muddy hole bathed in summer sun, while fishermen from the village of Bolotnikovo looked on disconsolately.
Officials in Nizhegorodskaya region, on the Volga river east of Moscow, said water in the lake might have been sucked down into an underground water-course or cave system, but some villagers had more sinister explanations.
"I am thinking, well, America has finally got to us," said one old woman, as she sat on the ground outside her house.

That is really interesting. What's more interesting is what the woman said about America finally getting to them. That is really hilarious.
It would be a disappointment especially if locals used it for fishing...out goes the summers on the boat. Hopefully the locals were not dependant on it for food!
Oh, my gosh! I'd sure like to see how happened to it -- as was quoted, it was sucked underground, but that would have been really interesting to see.
I wonder how that old woman decided it was America's fault? Very interesting.
Oh my gosh that's funny! America finally got us...I laughed so hard when I read that. Thanks Farseer. I love stories that are "off the radar" so to speak. I'm really interested in geology as a hobby of sorts and this really got me thinking.
