Everything happens for a reason
For me...this phrase has helped me through everything from bad relationships....to death...and has even been my excuse for not being able to attend a function.
How many times have you used this phrase in your life? Do you really believe it...or is it just a way to make us feel better about situations which have turned out badly?
i decided to post this under "religious beliefs" because i know that religion plays a part in this belief that there is a larger plan that we may not know of. Edited: cookie on 23rd Apr, 2004 - 4:45am
I think the phrase is kinda wishful thinking, but comes close to a good life philosophy. I think of it more like "bad things happen, but good things can come of them... whatever trouble you're in, what can you do to better your life out of it?" But I don't try to "force" everything to make sense.
Something like that...
I don't know that *everything* happens for a reason, but certainly a great deal of life's events have reasons -- but we may never know in this lifetime.
A recent discussion brought out the fact that it may sometimes be years before we understand the reasons behind certain events, and that, if you believe in God, his purposes may not be revealed for many years. But when we follow them from start to end, we sometimes see the wisdom in a seemingly random chain of events.

From my point of view, the saying should be something along the lines of, "God will make all things work for your good."
By this, I mean that although bad things may happen, you will gain experience out of them. Also, if you turn to God both during the good and bad times, He will take care of you and help you to get through the bad times, thus increasing the good that eventually comes of it.
I think I've heard the saying 'everything happens for a reason,' but I'm not sure if I believe that. I believe that good can come from all experiences, and that everything that happens to us can be used to strengthen and build us up. However I think that if we started saying that everything happens for a reason it would take away our ability to choose actions for ourselves.
For example, suppose a close friend gets shot by someone. With the philosophy that everything happens for a reason, that would almost make it sound like there was a reason your friend needed to be shot, and so the person who shot them was only carrying out fates decrees.
On the other hand, you can use the situation to strengthen yourself. And at the end of your life looking back, it will appear that everything happened for a reason, because each moment helped to define and mold you into what you currently are.
So I wouldn't say that everything that happens was 'supposed' to happen, but everything that happens can be fit into a larger pattern in our lives. I use this philosophy a lot to help with my personal struggles. I figure that any situation I am presented with can be a growing experience, and another rung on the ladder of self improvement.
