Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Do you know anyone with this condition?

Definition

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by bones that break easily, often from little or no apparent cause. There are at least four recognized forms of the disorder, representing extreme variation in severity from one individual to another. For example, a person may have just a few or as many as several hundred fractures in a lifetime.

Imperfecta Osteogenesis

I don't know anyone personally with this disorder. I believe it is a very rare condition. I saw a show on TV, I think the discovery channel, but not sure, that documented this condition. It showed several people with the disorder and gave a glimpse into their lives and the lives of their families as they dealt with this disorder. There is a new treatment originating in Canada that actually seems to have a lot of promise.

I don't know anybody with this disorder but I have seen different TV shows about it. I remember hearing the struggle of a mom who has a kid with this dicease and she said that it is so hard to deal with it that sometimes it is even harder when you want to just hug your kid to show affection and you cannot even do that for fear of breaking his bones, it was a really heart-breaking story. cry.gif
