DOCTORS SEPARATE LEGS OF 'MERMAID' BABY
Doctors in Peru say they have successfully separated the legs of a baby girl dubbed "little mermaid" because she was born with legs fused from her thighs to her ankles.

First, it seems awfully insensitive to name a little girl, mermaid girl because of her defect.
Second, I am astounded at how far we have made advances in science. The article mentioned that the actual surgery was televised. I think I would have loved to watch a surgery of that caliber. I am wondering if anyone has a link to the actual video you could download on the internet, I'm sure it exists somewhere.
It wasn't long ago that people just had to live with problems like this. Now, we see siamese twins joined at the head being sucessfully separated. I wonder how long it will be before these types of genetic malfunctions will be no big deal because of the ease at which surgeries to correct them can be performed. But going beyond that, what about the possibility of having the surgery before the child is born, in the womb. Proceeding while the child was still growing could allow the childs body the changes to grow properly before its finished the incubation period. With the speed at which science is progressing, nothing is out of reach.
