I like this Evo guy (though not his jumpers!)... when a reporter asked him whether he'd consider changing his stance on the legalisation of Bolivia's coca crop if the US threatened to withold financial aid otherwise (a large proportion of Bolivia's social budget is financed through the Inter-American Bank) he told him 'hell no!' (or words to that effect)... after all the guys an old coca farmer himself and relies on the support of indigenous coca growers. Well, I like his style I thought but the guy must be crazy - Bolivia needs the money... until he went on to say that he was planning on re-nationalising Bolivia's gas industry (shrewd move in an age when natural resources and energy production are at a premium) and would stop up any money lost through American aid drying up with private investment in the transport and distribution of Bolivia's natural gas - most likely using (and this is the genius part) Chinese capital. Oh how I belly laughed - they're gonna love that up at 'Casa Blanca' eh?! So, although Castro may not be around for too much longer, with Chavez and now Evo are we finally seeing the beginning of the end for the reign of the economic elites in Latin America?

It seems like Bolivia is heading down the path of Socialism:

QUOTE
Bolivian President sends in army to seize control of energy industry

The dramatic Labour Day decision by the Bolivian President Evo Morales to nationalise the energy industry has alarmed the Brazilian and Spanish governments and could scare off the very investment and expertise Bolivia needs to turn its vast natural resources into wealth for its poor.

I do agree that foreign companies often suck the resources of natives (why would they be there in the first place) and often make it hard for them to live because they are monopolistic in nature.
