'Pay-as-you-go' road charge plan

Drivers could pay up to £1.34 a mile in "pay-as-you go" road charges under new government plans. The transport secretary said the charges, aimed at cutting congestion, would replace road tax and petrol duty. Alistair Darling said change was needed if the UK was to avoid the possibility of "LA-style gridlock" within 20 years.

Article link does not work anymore. I however would be furious about the tax. I'm glad I don't live their and have to pay as I go, I have to drive a long way to my job. Why wont they considered just redoing some of the infrastructure? Maybe they can use the tax to restructure and thus prevent the future gridlocks.

I live in the UK and I have to admit I think this idea is preposterous. This is the future for road users in the U.K as I see it....

1)Constant increases in the tax added to fuel at the pump, currently edging closer and closer to £1 per Litre & beyond.

2)Pay per mile motoring, if this is not implemented, then greater increases in the yearly road tax we pay now.(which rises steadily every year anyway)

3)Insurance companies exploiting us more than they do already.

Its like we are being punished for driving, the only reason for this behaviour from our government, as I can see, is the fact that they are trying to force us off the roads by making driving financially impossible.
