So You Turned 18 Or 21

On the day you turned 18 (or 21 if this is the age of 'adulthood' in your country) did you feel like you became a man or woman as the case may be? Did you feel that way because of what the law told you that you could do now? Was it because you could now go to jail for certain crimes that a pre-adult could not? Looking back now, what were your reasons for feeling like a 'man / 'woman' because of the new age?

Turned So

I lost my enjoyment of drinking when I turned 21. The thrill of drinking was suddenly not enjoyable then. When I turned 18, the thrill of smoking was gone and it was suddenly a habit. I was never a renegade, but I stopped getting tickets for speeding after that also, started to realize I needed to be more responsible.

When I turned 18 and 21 I was partying like a rock star and It all didn't end until I found out I was pregnant. I was a good girl though completely through school and it wasn't until I moved out on my own that I realized how much fun I was missing out on. Probably, if I would have been allowed to hang out with my friends more in high school or perhaps stay a little later out at night without a curfew like most of them, I would have had all my partying and stuff out of the way before I hit 18 and 21.
The day I had my son was the defining age for me. All of a sudden I had a bunch of responsibility dropped in my lap that I did not have to deal with before and I felt a big change at that point. I had responsibilities like bills and a house, but the rest went straight to partying. I see now what a waste of money it all was, but a lot of good came out of it in the end.

Turned So

When I turned 18, I was almost 2 years into college. I was also dating my current wife, who had a 2-year old daughter. By the time I was 21, I was graduated from college, had accepted a job at IBM, and was 2 weeks away from getting married! You could say I grew up a bit too fast, but I never had the chance to sit back and figure out if I was an adult or not. If I had to pick an event, it would be the day I received my first paycheck from IBM. The joy of opening the envelope and seeing the fruit of my labor certainly made me feel like I was all grown up now.

When I turned 18 I moved to London from Scotland. When I was a kid I thought it would be easy not being told what to do, but when I turned 18 I had to pay bills, work for a living and it was nothing like I imagined it was gonna be when I was a kid.

I didn't really feel as if I had experienced the "grand awakening" of turning 18 or 21. My 18th birthday didn't reallly feel like a birthday. It was my senior year of high school, and I had school and band practice. There wasn't really anything special about it. If I were a smoker, then I would have been able to buy cigarettes, but I'm not, so it wasn't really significant. I dont' gamble, so it's not like I was liberated and would go play Bingo and by lottery tickets.

When I turned 21, which was last month, it also didn't feel like a birthday. My fiance and I watched the Georgia game, and that was really it. I got a couple of gifts, nothing major. I don't drink, so it wasn't like I could go buy alcohol.

I guess I'm just doomed. Heh heh...

So Turned 18 21

Well, I turned 18 sooooooo long ago, I am not sure I can really remember it. In fact, I think the day itself was a bit disappointing. It was the day my stepfather got his college degree. That really was a much bigger deal than my having a birthday even if it was my 18th. So, the focus was on him - as it should be because as an adult going to school at night and finally getting his degree, I think he deserved the recognition. He worked hard to get that degree. It would have been nicer, though, if the graduation ceremony had been on another day.

Anyway, shortly after that I left for Marine Corps basic training. I didn't feel especially grown up, though. After boot camp, I always had a place to sleep and food to eat, no bills, so my money was pretty much all party and fun.

I am not sure I have grown up even now! I think I am a toys r us kid.
