Religious devotion sets the United States apart from some of its closest allies. Americans profess unquestioning belief in God and are far more willing to mix faith and politics than people in other countries, AP-Ipsos polling found.

Quite a few people are going to say that this is a good thing. To me, mixing faith and government clouds the judgement for the better good of the people. Allow your faith in influence your vote, fine. Allow faith to influence the creation of laws regarding everything and you have an environment that enforces beliefs through legislation. I'm not surprised at the polls results though, Bush directly appealed to the religious right of the country for his voting. He played the faith card and it paid off. I admittedly voted for him, but only because I thought his opponent had no chance of being a good president. We are also the country with the most crime, so why isn't the high amount of faith that influences our internal policies translate into better laws, lower crime, and a better country?

This country's laws have been based upon religious beliefs since the beginning. As long as they aren't specific enough to force someone to practice a particular belief, I have no problem with it. I realize if someone doesn't believe in God they won't agree. However, if you do believe in God then you must believe it best to have your laws structured after his law. After all, if there is a God, his laws don't just pertain to those who believe in Him.

I agree the laws in the U.S. are based on the Christian belief system from the bible. What the original writers of the constitution did so well though is ensure that the government could not form a national religion that everyone would be required to follow. The constitution provided for the freedom of religion not freedom from religion. Just because a religious symbol is displayed does not mean that the nation is forcing a religion.
