The Best Medicine?

Laughter

Do you believe that laughter can make you healthier and in some cases even cure you of some diseases? Some doctors even believe that regular 'sessions' of laughter can reduce stress and otherwise cure depressed moments.

I strongly believe that if one is not laughing on a regular basis, then they are probably not happy with their life, their situation or their environment and that can only lead to stress. And stress leads to bad health. As for curing diseases, I am not so sure.

I definitely believe that laughter promotes wellness and can make you healthier. I also believe that it reduces stress and can shine light on dark moments. I think we have all had moments when laughter has lightened a difficult situation. When I was in therapy talking about some very heavy stuff, my counselor would make jokes all of the time. At first I wondered if he was laughing at my experiences, was he taking me seriously, and trivializing my experiences? I learned quickly how important laughter was to my healing. Even if I would be in a very sad, despairing state where I might even be crying, he could always make me laugh. It was just astonishing how my deepest pain could change in an instant to giggling resulting in the feelings that it wasn't so bad and I could overcome .

I had 7 surgeries in the year after my third child was born. When I was in the hospital people would come and visit me and usually end up making me laugh. While the laughter may have hurt a bit, I believe it did speed my healing. I know there are lots of studies that show that positive thinking and feelings improve healing. If laughter increases my positive thinking and feelings, then yes, laughter does help in the physical healing process. Some of you may have noticed that I love to quote information off of websites, so here it comes:

I think mostly cases of false illness may be cured by being happy. I usually feel aches when I am sad; throbbings in the side or in the backs. and they don't come from any medical reasons, it is sort of the body's way of warning you: "You are not doing ok. Get a hold of yourself. Get happier."

Yes I am a firm believer of "Laughter is the best medicine!" I think that when a person laughs, it is not only a way to feel good about yourself but some people also use it, as a way of coping with a difficult situation. If you have a problem and you are feeling powerless to do anything to rectify the matter, laughter often "breaks the tension" and relieves the stress that you are experiencing. Whenever we are upset, this builds up a lot of toxins in the body that could make you feel very ill or break down your immunity system. By eating a sensible diet, adopting a positive attitude and incorporating a lot of laughter in your life, it is possible to reduce stress and even eliminate depression. Laughter also helps your body to relax. Believe it or not, I have read somewhere that the latest scientific studies have shown that laughter also reduces wrinkles and may assist in losing weight too!

Social laughter releases endorphins in the brain. Researchers have revealed how laughter releases endorphins in the human brain. The more opioid receptors the participants had in their brain, the more they laughed during the experiment. Source 1y.

Yes, I think we've studied this enough to know laughing is good and the endorphins released are good for us. Do we really need to spend more on this?
