Wow, I hope it is just a "coincidence" otherwise some of us that suspected terrorism would be right and I really want to be wrong on this one!

Two names on doomed Air France Flight 447's passenger list also appear on a list of radical Muslims considered a threat to France, according to French investigators. French secret servicemen established the connection while working through the list of those who boarded the doomed Airbus in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 31. Agents are now trying to establish dates of birth for the two dead passengers, and family connections. There is a possibility that the name similarities are simply a "macabre coincidence," the source added, but the revelation is still being "taken very seriously." Flight AF447 crashed in mid-Atlantic en route to Paris during a violent storm. While it is certain that there were computer malfunctions, terrorism has not been ruled out. Soon after news of the fatal crash broke, agents working for the DGSE (Direction Generale de la Securite Exterieure), were dispatched to Brazil. It was there that they established that two names on the passenger list are also on highly classified documents listing the names of radical Muslims considered a threat to the French Republic. A source working for the French security services told Paris weekly L"Express that the link was "highly significant." |
I think that this is going to be ruled as just a coincidence. I do not think the flight went down due to terrorism or the terrorist groups would have already claimed responsibility. Since they have not I think this was just a mishap that was due to pilot error with faulty equipment.
That is pretty key. Terrorist want you to know that they did a horrible act. That is the terror part. Without that, it is just an accident.
The list of some 20 plus messages automatically sent from the plane indicate, over a 3 minute period, that the plane switched from autopilot to manual operations, it was losing electrical systems and then finally it lost cabin pressure and received a vertical speed warning.
If we think it was a bomb, I would expect somewhat of a reversed order of these alarms. If we think think the terrorist took control of the plane, they were really bad pilots. I can understand the disengagement of the autopilot, but how could they get electrical systems to fail - the alarms say fail and not switched off. Edited: Vincenzo on 11th Jun, 2009 - 12:48am
Hopefully, we will know now exactly what happened with this plane.

Air France Crash: 'Black Box Signals Located' French naval vessels detected a weak signal from the flight data recorders, Le Monde newspaper said. A mini-submarine, the Nautile, has been sent to try to find the boxes on the bottom of the ocean floor. The black boxes could contain vital information which may explain what happened when the Airbus A330 crashed into the water, killing all 228 people on board. Locator beacons, known as "pingers", on the flight recorders send out an electronic impulse every second for at least 30 days after a crash. The signal can be heard up to 2km (1.2 miles) away... |
