New Offer By Yahoo For Broadband --

I'm currently on a dial-up system with Netscape. I am very interested in the the new offer from Yahoo for broadband for the low price of $14.95 a month. I don't dislike Netscape but I think I'd enjoy the 'net even more if 'stuff' would happen faster. I visit a lot of newspaper sites that offer video newscasts and/or features. This seems to take forever to load with Netscape - even with the Accelerator active.

I'm not sure if going broadband will keep me safe. I'm sure being hacked does not depend on whether you have dial-up or broadband. But, correct me if I'm wrong, isn't broadband more vulnerable to hacking, even if you have a firewall?

I currently have McAfee security suite in place and haven't had any trouble. The notifications to update occurs several times a week. So I think I'm very current there.

If I go Yahoo/SBC Global, what should I expect to have to do? Extra equipment? What about extra phone charges they say to expect?

Do you have any info on this that you'd be willing to share with me?

Thanks
bfx

We use SBC/Yahoo. We are very happy with it.

You get a modem with the system. If you want to connect more than one computer, then you will need a router. We started with an ethernet router, but now have a Linksys wireless router. Currently, we have two laptops and one desktop computer hooked up to the system. It is very fast, and very reliable.

I would like to get the higher speed DSL system, but since we expect to move before too long, we don't want to get into a new contract.

I don't see all that much difference between the SBC/Yahoo DSL and the cable modem we used to have, except that the DSL is about 1/2 the price.

The only extra phone charges we have seen have been the basic DSL charge, which is included on our phone bill.

A router includes a good hardware firewall. If you have a good software firewall, and a good spyware program (or three), then you should be able to manage the security issues.

So you're saying that Yahoo supplies the modem? And, since I don't have multiple computers, will I still need the ethernet card?

Since I have SBC landline service anyway, the only additional charges should be the 14.95?

Yes, SBC supplies the DSL modem. There may be a fee, for something like $2/month, but it is very minimal if any.

Yes, you need an ethernet (10BaseT) capable computer, as that is the cable connection that the modem supplies. It is possible that they can provide the modem as a plug in card, but I doubt it.

I don't think there are any charges other than the contract rate, whatever it is. I think the $14.95 is an introductory rate, and it goes higher after a while, but I can't be sure of it without reading the offer that you got personally.
