Slovenia

There were a few suggestions that some of you would be interested in knowing more about the country I come from, so I opened this topic.

If there's anything in particular you'd like to know, don't hesitate to ask. I expect to be adding information here in several posts as it would be too big a chunk to put it all down in one go.

Let me start with som geographical data: Slovenia is a small European country, stretching between the Alps and Adriatic sea, with 2,000,000 inhabitants, most of them Slovenes / Slovenians (both terms are used in English), of predominantly Catholic religion. Ljubljana, the capital, is also the largest city, with poulation of 250,000. The highest mountain is Triglav, 2864 m, also our symbol, featuring in slovenian coat of arms. Almost half of the land (46%) is covered with forests. Slovenia has a very reach fauna and flora, because many different areas meet there - Alps, Mediterranean, Panonic steppe. Temperatures range from -20 C in winter to 36 C in the summer. One of the slovenian regions is Karst, where this phenomenon was first researched, and is probably the only slovene word that made it into english language. Slovenia is one of the new mambers of the European Union.

No diversity of races to speak of. Some immigrants, but not much.

As for the production, I'd have to look it up, but don't really know where. Farmaceutic industry is doing very well, and there are many small enterprises connected with european automobile industry. Then there's tourism. And agriculture still survives, and industry that turns it into food. Textile industry is in big trouble since it can't match China's cheap working force. That's all I can think of at the moment.

What I have often wondered about those who now live in independent countries from the former Soviet Union is this... as you look back do you see a difference between then and now on your environment? I am not asking about political changes, but based on the perception of the people... do they see themselves happier now? Have new trends or traditions been replaced or lost?

Slovenia was not part of Soviet Union, it was part of Yougoslavia, and while Yugoslavia was a socialist country, it was never part of Eastern block or the Warshaw Pact.

And people are as they always are: some are happier and some miss old times and social rights they had under the socialist regime. But practically everyone is very happy to be independent.

I intend to add a post on slovenian history tommorow.

Perhaps you might better picture where it lies, if I say that Slovenia borders on Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia.

Ah, excuse my ignorance, now you see how much I know about that part of the world. I have attached a basic map. Your people must be multilingual with all the tongues surrounding you? How do your people view Western cultures especially that of North America?
