Departing United States ambassador Charles Swindells has taken a swipe at the continuing drift in relations between New Zealand and his homeland, saying both sides have failed to address the mistrust that developed 20 years ago.

It is not fair to expect New Zealand to change its policy on nuclear war ships to allow the US to use nuclear warships in their waters. The US is wrong in this situation and needs to back down and accept the way things are elsewhere in the world. New Zealand has a no nuke policy that they hold iron clad and we should honor that with not resentment or recourse. Just because we have taken the nuclear path does not mean that other countries have to take the same path or even accept our path as OK.
Couldn't agreee with you more mate. We should applaud countries who don't want nuclear weapons. They are the ones displaying true leadership in the fight for peace.
